o Apple Comes Clean About Customer Data Revealed to Government

Cupertino, Calif. -- Trying to allay fears that it has been indiscriminately sharing customer data with the government, Cupertino-based Apple revealed on Monday it received between 4,000-5,000 requests from U.S. law enforcement for customer data over a six-month period ending in May. The company said between 9,000-10,000 accounts or devices were specified in those requests, which came from federal, state and local authorities and included both criminal investigations and national security matters. "We do not provide any government agency with direct access to our servers, and any government agency requesting customer content must get a court order," the company said in a statement. The disclosure comes in the wake of revelations that the National Security Agency (NSA) secretly monitored U.S. phone and Internet activity. Apple said the most common form of request comes from police investigating robberies and other crimes, searching for missing children, trying to locate a patient with Alzheimer's disease or hoping to prevent a suicide. Other companies, such as Facebook and Microsoft, have made similar disclosures in recent days.
