DCM led the round, which included participation from several previous investors. The company wil use the proceeds fund growth initiatives, including product enhancements, distribution and localization of its app for international markets, as well as product integration with partners in the home security and automotive sectors. Founded in 2008, Life360, which recently surpassed 40 million users, is a free app for Apple and Android devices that uses location-based technology to help its users stay connected through a private map and chat stream, regular check-ins, and "panic alerts." U.S. District Judge Denise Cote said that the Cupertino-based company and publishing partners "act[ed] together in a matter of weeks to eliminate all retail price competition for their e-books." As a result, Cote said that the price of e-books -- which had typically been $9.99 for new releases on Amazon -- rose by at least half virtually overnight. Damages will be determined in a separate trial. Razor's Edge, Virginia's Center for Innovative Technology and B7 also took part in the round, which the company will use to expand its engineering, operations and sales and marketing teams, as well as to open an office in Silicon Valley later this month. San Francisco -- Digital Realty Trust, a San Francisco-based owner and operator of data centers, plans to spend at least $150 million by 2015 to expand its data center facilities in Loudoun County, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell said on Wednesday. The move is expected to create at least 50 new jobs. The company said a sales tax exemption for data center owners played a major role in its decision. "The significant relief we and our customers expect to receive effectively lowers the total cost of ownership of our data centers in the area," said CEO Michael Foust, adding that the area already was "one of the most attractive data center markets in the country." The company, which emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy at the end of last year, said the move will allow it to devote greater financial and operational focus to each business. "The separation is designed to allow each company to maximize its flexibility and competitiveness in a rapidly changing media environment," said Peter Liguori, the company's president and CEO. The news comes a week after Tribune said it would nearly double its television holdings by acquiring Ohio-based Local TV for $2.7 billion in cash.
