o Milpitas-Based SanDisk to Acquire Smart Storage Systems

Milpitas, Calif. -- SanDisk, the Milpitas-based maker of flash memory storage products, said on Tuesday it will pay approximately $307 million in cash to acquire Newark-based Smart Storage Systems, a developer of enterprise solid state drives. The deal is expected to close in August, with approximately 250 employees of Smart joining SanDisk. It marks SanDisk's fourth acquisition in the enterprise storage market. "With this combination, SanDisk will have products qualified with six of the top seven storage OEMs worldwide," said Sumit Sadana, the company's executive vice president and chief strategy officer. Smart Storage Systems generate about $25 million in revenue for the quarter ended May 31.

o Palo Alto-Based Pixate Raises $3.8 Million in First Round

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Pixate, the Palo Alto-based developer of user interfaces for native mobile apps, said on Tuesday it has raised $3.8 million in its first round of funding, led by Accel Partners. The company, launched in January out of Y-Combinator, plans to use the funding to expand its support staff and develop for the Android platform. Pixate's flagship product, the Pixate Engine for iOS, is designed to dramatically reduce the amount of code required while building and experimenting with user interfaces. The product lets developers alter design elements of an app without having to resubmit to an app store. "Testing between various looks and themes, or being able to dynamically change UI elements based on demographic or geographic rules is just the tip of the iceberg of what Pixate brings to native mobile apps," said co-founder and CEO Paul Colton.

o Report: Google Led All Tech Companies in Lobbying Spending in 2012

Mountain View, Calif. -- Google spent more than twice as much on lobbying last year as any other tech company, according to a new report by George Mason University's Mercatus Center, drawn from information from the Center for Responsive Politics. The Mountain View-based tech giant spent more than $16 million inside the Beltway last year, topping Microsoft and Palo Alto-based HP, which each spent roughly $8 million. Report authors Adam Thierer and Brent Skorup write that cronyism is becoming a larger problem in Washington. "The danger of creeping cronyism in the high-tech field is that it will dull entrepreneurialism and competition in this highly innovative sector," they write. "Cronyism also raises the specter of greater government control of the Internet and of the digital economy more generally. When policymakers dispense favors, they usually expect something in return." The complete report is available at the link below.

o Number of IPOs More Than Doubles in Second Quarter

New York -- Twenty-one venture-backed U.S. companies raised $2.1 billion in initial public offerings (IPOs) during the second quarter, more than double the volume of the previous quarter, according to a new report by Thomson Reuters and the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA). The period also saw the highest number of biotech IPOs since the third quarter of 2000. "We have been predicting an IPO pickup in the second half of 2013 and it appears as if this momentum has begun, driven by the strong biotechnology offerings," said Mark Heesen, president of the NVCA. "We are hopeful that this positive trend will not be impacted by negative externalities in the second half of the year, as has been the case over the last several years." While the number of IPOs soared, the number of venture-backed M&A deals (84) dropped 53% from the same period in 2012.
