o San Mateo-Based RingCentral Prices IPO, Shares Soar 40% in Debut

San Mateo, Calif. -- Shares of San Mateo-based RingCentral spiked 40% on their first day of trading Friday, hours after the developer of cloud-based business communications tools priced its initial public offering (IPO). The company is selling 7.5 million shares -- all but 80,000 directly from the company -- for $13 each, the high end of its expected range of $11-$13. Shares, now trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "RNG," closed at $18.14. RingCentral, which was primarily backed by Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures and DAG Ventures, generated $106 million in sales last year for a net loss of about $34 million.

o Palo Alto-Based Unsilo Lands Funding form Scale Capital

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Unsilo, a Palo Alto-based developer of semantic search technology for researchers, said on Friday that it has raised an unspecified amount of funding from Scale Capital. The funds will help the company publically launch its core platform in November. Unsilo was co-founded last year by Mads Rydahl, previously the senior director of product design at Siri. Rydahl said his company's technology is designed to find clusters of related documents across seemingly unrelated domains, by matching the meaning of user queries, instead of just the words. "A chemist might look for research in a chemistry journal. But real ground-breaking discoveries often emerge across numerous disciplinary fields and patent databases almost simultaneously," said Rydal. "Unsilo dynamically identifies such clusters of related documents." The company last year launched MedQL.com, a research tool that helps geneticists discover hidden relationships between genes and diseases.

San Jose, Calif. -- eBay said on Friday it has acquired San Francisco-based Bureau of Trade, operator of a curated online marketplace featuring unique and rare items geared toward men. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Backed by Foundation Capital, Founder Collective and Tech Fellows, Bureau of Trade features items as diverse as classic cars and vintage chronographs to mummy cartonage and petrified lightning. Founder Michael Phillips Moskowitz has joined the eBay Marketplaces team. "As an influential tastemaker, Michael is perfectly poised to further eBay’s mission of connecting shoppers to the things they need and love," said Richelle Parham, the CMO of eBay North America. Moskowitz previously worked at Palo Alto-based design firm IDEO and co-founded the menswear label Gytha Mander and TODO Monthly magazine

o Report: Online Shoppers Seeking More Shipping, Delivery Options

Reston, Va. -- Online shoppers are looking for more control over the shipping and delivery process, according to a new study by comScore and UPS. The report found that online shopping satisfaction in the U.S. is less than 50% for flexibility to change delivery dates and reroute packages. Still, when compared with the rest of the world, shoppers in the U.S. are the most satisfied with their online shopping experiences at 83%, while consumers in the Asia Pacific region are least satisfied at only 50%. More than half of consumers around the world said they would shop more with a retailer offering a hassle-free returns policy. The full report is available at the link below.

o Tribune to Make $100 Million in Cuts to Newspaper Business

Chicago -- Media giant Tribune has ordered executives in its publishing business to come up with $100 million in budget cuts, Chicago media reporter Robert Feder wrote on his blog. The cuts, expected to affect all departments, are expected to go into effect Dec. 1. The news comes as Tribune is preparing to spin off its newspapers and focus solely on broadcasting. "They need to show that the publishing unit is going to be solvent to run on its own when they spin it off," an unnamed source told Feder. Tribune operates newspaper such as The Chicago Tribune, The Los Angeles Times, The Baltimore Sun and The South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
