For the report, researchers fromsecurity firm ID Agent reviewed email domains for the 300 largest higher education institutions in the U.S., and found nearly 14 million email addresses and passwords belonging to faculty, staff, students and alumni on the dark web over a span of eight years. Nearly 80% have been discovered over the past year, alone. Credentials from the University of Michigan topped the list, followed by Penn State University, the University of Minnesota, Michigan State University, The Ohio State University, the University of Illinois, New York University, the University of Florida, Virginia Tech University and Harvard University. Most of the .edu addresses are fake, a hacktivist, who used the name "DeadMellox" told Digital Citizens, adding that "most people simply create and then sell them, instead of actually taking them from a site." The fake e-mails then can be used to scam others in the university and college communities, or to take advantage of discounts offered on software and various other products.
