o Santa Cruz-Based Looker Lands $81.5 Million in Fourth Round

Santa Cruz, Calif. -- Looker, the Santa Cruz-based developer of a data platform designed to help users make better business decisions, said it has raised $81.5 million in its fourth round of funding, by CapitalG, the growth equity investment fund of Google-parent Alphabet. New investors Geodesic Capital and Goldman Sachs, as well as previous backers Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Meritech Capital Partners, Redpoint Ventures and Sapphire Ventures also took part in the round, which increased the company's total funding to $177.5 million since 2013. Looker said it will use the latest proceeds to bolster product development and sales and marketing activities, and continue to expand internationally, including in the Asia Pacific region. The company now counts over 300 employees, after adding more than 100 throughout its five offices last year. Its customer list includes Sony, Amazon, The Economist, Kohler, Etsy, Lyft and Kickstarter.

o San Francisco-Based Raise.me Lands $12 Million in New Funding Round

San Francisco -- Raise.me, the San Francisco-based developer of a platform aiming to expand access to college by earning incremental scholarship awards, said it has raised $12 million in a new round of funding, led by Redpoint Ventures. GSV Acceleration and previous backers Owl Ventures, First Round Capital and SJF Ventures also participated. Founded in 2012 and launched nationally two years later, Raise.me allows high school students to earn micro-scholarships from colleges for achievements such as earning A's in courses or participating in extracurricular activities. The total amount can then be used towards tuition if the student is accepted into the partner school. The more than 225 colleges using the platform include Northeastern, NYU, ASU, Oberlin, Penn State, Georgia Tech and Tulane. "By providing students with a way to plan for college earlier on in high school, both academically and financially, we're creating a more transparent, empowering system to help students achieve their college and career ambitions," said co-founder and CEO Preston Silverman.

o Santa Clara-Based JoyRun Raises $8.5M in First Round to Launch Nationwide

Santa Clara, Calif. -- JoyRun, the Santa Clara-based developer of a peer-to-peer platform for group deliveries to college campuses, said it has raised $8.5 million in its first round of funding and announced its nationwide launch. Floodgate led the round, which followed a $1.3 million seed round, led by Norwest Venture Partners. Both rounds included participation from Visionnaire Ventures, Morado Ventures, CrunchFund, Triplepoint Capital and angel investors. The company, which has been testing its concept in beta mode at 50 campuses since 2015, said it will use the funds to expand into all U.S. college campuses, as well as offices and neighborhoods later this year. JoyRun operates a social feed that matches buyers with locals planning to make runs to local eateries, coffee shops, hardware stores and other businesses in a given area. A mobile app lets buyers view, pay for and track their orders, as well as chat with others about potential runs. Drivers determine the delivery fees, which can be up to $5. "Today's delivery services are the black car version of Uber that serve just the technology hubs of San Francisco and New York," said co-founder and CEO Manish Rathi. "The world needs something that is not only convenient but cost-effective. We're building an entirely new category for the 99% by connecting and empowering local communities to foster their own UberPool-like service."

"This acquisition will provide Akamai customers, many of whom are already SOASTA customers, with a new way to measure and test the optimizations they are making to their sites, and validate the actual business impact of their site's performance," said SOASTA co-founder and CEO Tom Lounibos.

o San Francisco-Based MapD Technologies Raises $25 Million in Second Round

San Francisco -- MapD Technologies, the San Francisco-based developer of a platform designed to let users interactively explore massive data sets, said it has raised $25 million in its second round of funding, led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA). Previous backers NVIDIA, Vanedge Capital and Verizon Ventures also participated. The company said its platform utilizes the processing power of graphics processing units (GPUs), which are increasing being used to power enterprise applications like machine learning, numerical computation and data analytics. "This investment will enable us to advance our vision of making GPU analytics a dominant technology in the enterprise," said co-founder and CEO Todd Mostak. The company plans to use the funds to accelerate the development of its technology and increase customer adoption. Its platform is currently used by customers across the advertising, energy, financial services, government, retail, social media and telecom sectors. The news comes a year after MapD announced its first round of funding, which included participation from In-Q-Tel, a venture fund backed by the CIA.

o Extreme Networks to Acquire Brocade's Data Center Networking Business

San Jose, Calif. -- Extreme Networks, a San Jose-based developer of software-driven networking tools, said it will pay $55 million in cash to acquire the data center switching, routing and analytics business of Brocade Communications Systems, the San Jose-based developer of data and storage networking products. The deal is expected to close by the end of September, within 60 days of Broadcom's pending acquisition of Brocade. It includes $35 million at closing and $20 million in deferred payments, as well as additional potential performance-based payments over a five-year term. "The addition of Brocade's data center networking business significantly strengthens our position in the expanding high-end data center market and reinforces our strategy of delivering software-driven networking solutions focused on enterprise customers," said Ed Meyercord, the president and CEO of Extreme. The company said it expects to generate more than $230 million in annual revenue from the acquired assets. Extreme has been on a buying spree in recent months, acquiring the wireless LAN business of Zebra Technology in October and announcing a deal for the networking business of Avaya earlier this month.

AT&T to Build Long-Needed Wireless Network for First Responders

Washington, DC -- In a long-awaited move to improve the communication of police, fire and emergency medical personnel, the Department of Commerce on Thursday tabbed AT&T to build the first nationwide wireless broadband network dedicated to first responders. The high-speed network will aim to eliminate communications barriers between departments and jurisdictions, which have run into problems with overloaded and inaccessible networks during large-scale emergencies. It also will bring to fruition a key recommendation made by the 9/11 Commission more than 12 years ago. Under the deal, the department's First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) will provide 20 MHz of telecom spectrum for the network, investing $6.5 billion -- raised from previous FCC spectrum auctions -- over the next five years to support its buildout. AT&T also will spend about $40 billion to build, operate and maintain the network over the next 25 years, and connect FirstNet users to its network assets. "Today is a landmark day for public safety across the nation," said Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross. "FirstNet is a critical infrastructure project that will give our first responders the communications tools they need to keep America safe and secure."

o Survey: More Than 80% of Experts Expect Poor Online Behavior to Get Worse

Washington, DC -- Uncivil acts and manipulative behaviors online will continue and possibly expand over the next decade, according to a new survey of more than 1,500 technologists, futurists and scholars by Pew Research Center and Elon University's Imagining the Internet Center. More than 80% of the experts said they expect the tone of online discourse to stay the same or get worse between now and 2026. "The vast majority of these experts believe the online environment will continue to be shaped by trolling and other anti-social behaviors and struggles over phony or semi-phony information sometimes presented in `weaponized' forms," said Lee Rainie, Pew's director of Internet, science and technology research. "They predict that human and technological fixes will be implemented, but that an arms race with bad actors will persist that could fundamentally hurt the open internet that many of these experts helped create." The full report is available at the link below.

Report: Millions of College Emails and Passwords Being Shared on Dark Web

Washington, DC -- Cyber criminals are sharing credentials to .edu email accounts at an alarming rate, according to a new report from the nonprofit Digital Citizens Alliance. For the report, researchers fromsecurity firm ID Agent reviewed email domains for the 300 largest higher education institutions in the U.S., and found nearly 14 million email addresses and passwords belonging to faculty, staff, students and alumni on the dark web over a span of eight years. Nearly 80% have been discovered over the past year, alone. Credentials from the University of Michigan topped the list, followed by Penn State University, the University of Minnesota, Michigan State University, The Ohio State University, the University of Illinois, New York University, the University of Florida, Virginia Tech University and Harvard University. Most of the .edu addresses are fake, a hacktivist, who used the name "DeadMellox" told Digital Citizens, adding that "most people simply create and then sell them, instead of actually taking them from a site." The fake e-mails then can be used to scam others in the university and college communities, or to take advantage of discounts offered on software and various other products. "Higher education institutions have deployed resources and talent to make university communities safer, but highly skilled and opportunistic cyber criminals make it a challenge to protect large groups of highly-desirable digital targets," said Adam Benson, the organization's deputy executive director. "We shared this information from cybersecurity researchers to create more awareness of just what kinds of things threat actors are capable of doing with an .edu account."

o Google Looking to Boost Diversity Through New Howard University Program

Mountain View, Calif. -- Looking to bolster its recruitment of African-American software engineers, Mountain View-based Google said it has partnered with Howard University to launch a summer computer science residency called "Howard West." The three-month program, for rising juniors and seniors at Howard, will include a dedicated workspace at the company's Mountain View campus and a stipend to cover housing and other expenses in Silicon Valley. Howard President Wayne Frederick said the move will "[rally] the tech industry and other thought leaders around the importance of diversity in business and the communities they serve." The program expands on a longstanding partnership between the organizations, with the Google in Residence (GIR) program already embedding Google engineers as faculty at Howard and other Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Google said it expects to include about 740 new students in the program within five years, with plans to eventually expand it to other HBCUs. "Howard West will continue Howard's tradition of providing unprecedented access to opportunity, only now with a presence in the heart of Silicon Valley," said Bonita Stewart, Google's vice president of global partnerships, and a Howard alumna.

As part of a pilot program beginning in April, customers in Sunnyvale and Lynwood, Wash. will be able to use Google Tango-enabled smartphones to search for products, add them to a shopping list and locate them within the store using augmented reality. The app uses motion tracking, area learning and depth perception to guide customers through the store using a mixed reality interface. Customer can create a list of their required items, then follow directional prompts overlaid onto the real-world setting to find each item using the most efficient route around the store.
