o Palo Alto-Based Wheelz Lands $13.7 Million in Round Led by Zipcar

Palo Alto, Calif. – Wheelz, the Palo Alto-based developer of a peer-to-peer car sharing service targeting college campuses, said on Wednesday it has raised $13.7 million in its first round of funding, led by car-sharing network Zipcar. Fontinalis Partners also participated. Scott Griffith, the chairman and CEO of Zipcar, and Mark Schulz, founding partner at Fontinalis, have joined the company's board. "Zipcar knows and understands the business complexities of car sharing better than anyone on the planet; we will benefit tremendously from this expertise as we continue to grow," said founder and CEO Jeff Miller. Wheelz's platform is designed to connect students who own cars with students who need them, allowing owners to earn extra money. The company's service is currently available at Stanford, and is launching soon at UC Berkeley, USC and UCLA.

o Mountain View-Based Synopsys Completes Deal for Magma Design Automation

Mountain View, Calif. -- Synopsys, a Mountain View-based provider of electronic design automation (EDA) software and services, said on Wednesday it has completed its acquisition of San Jose-based Magma Design Automation in a deal worth approximately $523 million. Under the agreement, first announced in December, Synopsys paid $7.35 a share in cash. Magma's EDA software is used by major semiconductor manufacturers to complex integrated circuits. Founded in 1997, the company has around 700 employees, and generated $35.3 million in revenue during the quarter ended July 31. o States Seek to Halt Google Privacy Changes in Letter to CEO

Mountain View, Calif. -- Attorneys General from 36 U.S. states and territories, including California, on Wednesday expressed their concerns about recently announced changes to the privacy policy of Mountain View-based Google, sending a letter to CEO Larry Page. The AGs have requested a meeting with Page, and have given the company a week to respond. The changes, scheduled to automatically take effect on March 1, essentially would allow Google to take the personal information it collects when consumers use one of its services, and share it with all of the company's other services. "Our offices litigate cases of identity fraud with regularity, and it seems plain to us that Google's privacy policy changes, which suggest your company's intent to create richer personal data profiles, pose the risk of much more damaging cases of identity theft and fraud when that data is compromised," said the letter, authored by Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler. "With this newly consolidated bank of personal data, we foresee potentially more severe problems arising from any data breach."

o Vox Media Launches Video Game Hub on The Verge

Washington, DC -- Vox Media, the media company known until late last year as SB Nation, said it has launched a new video game hub, featuring breaking news, features and reviews. The content is currently available as part of The Verge, the company's recently launched technology site, but is expected to launch as a standalone site later this year. "As I told you back at the beginning of January, gaming coverage was coming to our network in a very real (and frankly sexy) manner via the recently formed supergroup of Vox Games," wrote Joshua Topolsky, editor-in-chief of The Verge and former editor-in-chief of AOL's Engadget. "Right off the bat, I think it's pretty clear that the Vox Games crew will be producing the kind of intelligent content that you can't find just anywhere on the Internet." Initial features on the site cover subjects such as an unearthed Call of Duty title that never made it to market and how some states require fingerprinting to sell used games.
