o San Jose-Based Cisco to Acquire Lightwire for $271 Million

San Jose, Calif. -- Cisco, the San Jose-based networking equipment giant, said on Friday it will pay approximately $271 million to acquire Lightwire, a Pennsylvania-based developer of optical interconnect technology for high-speed networking, with West Coast offices in Santa Clara. The deal is expected to close by the end of April, when Lightwire's employees will be integrated into Cisco's Transceiver Modules Group Business Unit and Supply Chain Operations Group. Cisco said the acquisition will give it access to low-power CMOS photonics technology, helping it deliver high-speed networks with the next generation of optical connectivity. The news comes nearly two years after Cisco acquired San Jose-based CoreOptics, a designer of digital signal processing tools used in high-speed optical networking.
