o Santa Clara-Based CrestaTech Raises $13 Million in New Funding

Santa Clara, Calif. -- CrestaTech, a Santa Clara-based developer of "smart tuners" for TV and mobile devices, said on Monday it has raised $13 million in a round of funding co-led by Bechtolsheim Ventures, Benhamou Global Ventures, Sofinnova Ventures and AVM Capital. The company said the funding will help it release several new products this year. Originally marketed under the Xceive brand, CrestaTech's architecture features an RF tuner and a programmable digital signal processor (DSP). Several flat panel TV makers now use the technology, which enables region-free TV reception on any device. CrestaTech said its chips and software will soon be found in a variety of mobile devices, including notebooks, tablets, smartphones and media players. "Our products enable a single global platform for the TV of the future that is adaptable to support the cloud services, applications and feature sets found in mobile devices," said CEO George Haber.

San Jose, Calif. -- NeoPhotonics, a San Jose-based maker of photonic integrated circuits used in high-speed communications networks, said on Monday it has landed a new $39.8 million investment from Russian investment firm Rusnano. Under the deal, the company sold 4.97 newly issued shares to Rusnano for $8 each, and appointed Sergey Polikarpov, Rusnano's managing director, to its board of directors. NeoPhotonics said it will use a portion of the proceeds to establish design and production capabilities in Russia, a market being targeted by a growing number of its clients "We started to see and investigate this growth opportunity several years ago, and we added sales capability in the region and have since been engaged with and supplying several customers in Russia," said Tim Jenks, the chairman, president and CEO of NeoPhotonics. "With the planned support from Rusnano, we believe that NeoPhotonics is well-positioned to capitalize on new and greater opportunities in the region."

o Microsoft to Invest $300 Million in Barnes & Noble's Nook Unit

Redmond, Wash. -- Microsoft said on Monday it will invest $300 million in Barnes & Noble's Nook digital books business in a move that values the unit at $1.7 billion. The software giant will own a 17.6% stake of the business, which is competing with Amazon's Kindle and Apple's iPad in the fast-growing e-reader market. The newly formed unit also includes Barnes & Noble's college business, which sells Nook study software. "The shift to digital is putting the world's libraries and newsstands in the palm of every person's hand," said Andy Lees, the president of Microsoft. "Our complementary assets will accelerate e-reading innovation across a broad range of Windows devices." In the first of several planned moves, the companies said they will release a Nook app for Windows 8, providing Barnes & Noble's digital catalogue of e-books, magazines and newspapers to Windows customers in the U.S. and abroad. The news comes nearly four months after Barnes & Noble said it was considering the possible sale or spinoff of the business.

o Report: Digital Media Increasingly Shaping Political Campaigns

Reston, Va. -- Digital advertising and social media are playing increasingly important roles in political campaigns, according to a new report by comScore. "Digital media has emerged over the past few election cycles as a formidable platform for political campaigns, providing the ability to efficiently target campaign messages and reach key voting constituencies at a fraction of the cost of traditional media," said Andrew Lipsman, comScore's vice president of industry analysis. "Political blogs, online advertising and online fundraising have helped shape the past few elections, but 2012 will almost certainly be remembered as the 'social media election' given how central Facebook and Twitter have become to the current digital battleground."
