Previous backer Khosla Ventures also participated in this round, which the company will use to expand its facilities and add hardware and software engineering talent. Solum's measurement systems and software are designed to help farmers make better agricultural decisions and increase their profits. o Google Unveils $199 Tablet to Take on iPad, Kindle Fire


Mountain View, Calif. -- Looking to take on the Apple iPad and Amazon Kindle Fire, Mountain View-based Google on Wednesday unveiled its own entrant to the tablet computer market, called the Nexus 7. The seven-inch tablet will run on a newly released version of the company's Android operating system -- known as Jelly Bean -- and sell for $199 for an 8GB version or $249 for 16GB. Other features include a front-facing camera, quad-core processor and up to eight hours of battery life. The tablet, built by Taiwan's Asus, is expected to ship in 2-3 weeks.

o Sunnyvale-Based Aptus Endosystems Lands $25 Million in Funding

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Aptus Endosystems, a Sunnyvale-based medical device company developing technology for endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), said on Wednesday it has raised $25 million in a new round of funding, led by Synergy Life Science Partners. Previous backers US Venture Partners and Longitude Capital Management also participated in the round, which the company will use to expand commercialization of its HeliFX Aortic Securement System in the U.S. and Europe. "We will judiciously utilize these funds to expand the use of HeliFX in targeted markets and introduce new aortic repair products, all while approaching profitability," said James Reinstein, the company's president and CEO.

o San Jose-Based Cypress Secures $430 Million Credit Facility

San Jose, Calif. -- Cypress Semiconductor, a San Jose-based developer of mixed-signal, programmable chips, said on Wednesday it has landed a new five-year, $430 million revolving credit facility with a group of lenders led by Morgan Stanley Senior Funding. The company said it plans to draw down $153 million immediately, and can use the borrowings for working capital, acquisitions, stock repurchases and other general corporate purposes. "The facility enhances Cypress's credit profile and provides us further financial flexibility to support our long-term corporate objectives," said Brad Buss, the company's executive vice president of finance and CFO.

o Sunnyvale-Based Yahoo Names Three Key Executives

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Yahoo on Wednesday announced three key executive hires, naming Rich Cusick as vice president of entertainment and women's lifestyles, John Buchanan as head of its consumer marketing team and Scott Bushman as head of the U.S. Hispanic market for the company's media network. Cusick most recently served as the interim general manager at Chemistry.com, a division of Match.com, Buchanan was the vice president of worldwide marketing at Electronic Arts (EA) and Bushman -- a Yahoo employee from 2004-2008 -- was the senior vice president of digital at Wasserman Media Group. In addition, the Sunnyvale-based company said that Ken Fuchs will move into an expanded global role overseeing Yahoo's Sports and Games media businesses including global oversight for product development.
