Previous backers First Round Capital, Menlo Ventures, Rustic Canyon Partners and several angels also participated in the round, which the company will use to accelerate product development, advance its mobile efforts and further expand into new markets. UrbanSitter's service allows parents to instantly view sitters known through friends or affiliations -- including schools, sports teams and parent groups -- and view each sitter's availability in order to select a sitter for a specific date and time. Parents also can contribute written reviews, ratings and Facebook "Likes" to sitter profiles. Since launching in San Francisco in Sept. 2011, the company has acquired more than 22,000 members and is increasing the number of sitter bookings at an average rate of 35% a month. Under the deal, expected to close in mid-2013, SoftBank will pay $12.1 billion to Sprint shareholders, as well as another $8 billion that will go toward strengthening the company's balance sheet. Masayoshi Son, the chairman and CEO of SoftBank, said the acquisition provides a "constructive beginning toward creating a more competitive American wireless market." The program awards $100,000 grants to 20 people under 20 years old, so they can skip school in favor of a two-year fellowship to pursue their scientific, technical and entrepreneurial ideas. Jonathan Cain, president of the Thiel Foundation, called the program "a way for driven young innovators to experience the entrepreneurial world by taking bold risks and learning for themselves what it takes to bring their dreams to fruition."
