Timothy McCarthy, the former president of Charles Schwab, and Ben Chodor, the founder and former CEO of Stream57, also participated. Chodor will join Sherpa as co-CEO and managing director. The company will use the proceeds to expand operations, opening a new studio in New York City, expanding its San Francisco office and opening a satellite studio in London. http://www.sherpadigitalmedia.com http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20131219006021/en/Sherpa-Digital-Media-Secures-Funding-Announces-Plans _____________________________________________ o Menlo Park-Based Facebook Planning Massive Follow-On Offering Menlo Park, Calif. -- Nineteen months after its massive initial pubic offering (IPO), Menlo Park-based social networking giant Facebook on Thursday announced plans for a follow-on offering of 70 million shares. About 27 million of the shares would be offered by the company, with the remainder sold by current stockholders. That includes 41.35 million from CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who plans to use the bulk of his estimated $2.3 billion in proceeds to pay taxes related to his exercise of a stock option to purchase 60 million shares. Facebook shares closed at $55.05 on Thursday. http://www.facebook.com http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/facebook-announces-proposed-follow-on-offering-236530631.html _____________________________________________ o San Jose-Based eBay Completes $800 Million Deal for Braintree San Jose, Calif. -- Nearly three months after first announcing the deal, San Jose-based eBay said on Thursday it has completed its $800 million acquisition of Chicago-based Braintree, developer of a popular mobile payments platform. Braintree will now operate as a separate service within PayPal under the leadership of current CEO Bill Ready. Braintree's platform is used by companies such as Airbnb, OpenTable, HotelTonight and Uber. Venmo, the company's mobile app that lets users pay each other using their mobile devices, is part of the acquisition and will remain a separate app. PayPal said the acquisition will accelerate its presence in mobile payments. http://www.ebayinc.com https://www.braintreepayments.com/ http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20131219005777/en/eBay-Completes-Acquisition-Global-Payments-Innovator-Braintree _____________________________________________ o IBM Acquires Emeryville-Based Aspera Emeryville, Calif. -- Computing giant IBM said on Thursday it will acquire Emeryville-based Aspera, a developer of technology designed to speed the movement of massive data files. Financial terms of the deal, expected to close in the first quarter, were not disclosed. Aspera's high-speed transfer technology reduces transmission times for large files or data sets by up to 99.9% -- potentially cutting a 26 hour transfer of a 24 gigabyte file down to 30 seconds. The technology is designed to overcome inherent bottlenecks in broadband wide area networks that slow the transfer of extremely large files, such as high-definition video or scientific research files. "With this acquisition, IBM addresses a key challenge for globally integrated enterprises by allowing them to move large data files much faster to the individuals who need them, wherever in the world they may be," said John Mesberg, IBM's vice president of B2B and commerce solutions. http://www.ibm.com http://asperasoft.com/ http://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/42782.wss _____________________________________________ o FCC to Explore Eliminating Sports Blackout Rules Washington, DC -- The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) plans to explore whether it should eliminate sports blackout rules, which sometimes keep fans from watching their teams' games -- particularly in the National Football League (NFL) -- when home stadiums don't sell out. A coalition of consumer, media and fan groups filed a joint petition to eliminate the 40-year-old rules in late 2011, labeling them "anti-consumer." The FCC, which plans to accept public comments before voting on the matter, appears to be in favor of a change. "It appears from the existing record that television revenues have replaced gate receipts as the most significant source of revenue for NFL clubs in the 40 years since the rules were first adopted," the FCC wrote. "Moreover, the record received thus far indicates no direct link between blackouts and increased attendance at NFL games." http://www.fcc.gov/document/nprm-sports-blackout-rules _____________________________________________ |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| Digital Entertainment World: Register Now and Save $200 Digital Entertainment World (DEW) is the best place to connect with content creators and owners, enabling technology providers, digital distributors and device manufacturers to create the infrastructure and technology partnerships necessary to monetize digital content.
