Tiger Global and previous backers Ribbit Capital and Susquehanna Growth Equity also participated in the round, which raised the company's total funding since to $118.5 million. Credit Karma, which has provided more than 20 million U.S. consumers with access to their credit scores since launching in 2008, said it will use the proceeds to develop new, free services designed to help consumers better understand and manage their finances. The company also plans to bolster its staff. The Mountain View-based company reportedly is considering a 8,000-square-foot space in New York's SoHo neighborhood, about a block away from an Apple store. Business Insider noted that Google until now has relied on spaces inside retailers such as Best Buy to promote its Nexus and Chromebook products. Forty finalists, narrowed from an original list of nearly 1,800 high school seniors, competed in the finals in Washington, DC over the past week. Eric Chen, 17, of San Diego claimed first prize for his research on drugs that inhibit endonuclease, an enzyme essential for viral propagation. Second-place and $75,000 went to Kevin Lee, 17, of Irvine, Calif., who developed a mathematical model to describe the shape of the heart as it beats using the principles of fluid mechanics. And third-place and $50,000 went to William Henry Kuszmaul, 17, of Lexington, Mass., who developed a new approach to the mathematics of modular enumeration. Jobs in the IT sector increased 0.4% to just over 4.6 million, and have grown by more than 100,000 in the past year. Engineering jobs also grew 0.2% to just under 2.5 million. "I am very bullish on the future," said Mark Roberts, CEO of the TechServe Alliance. "Absent a geopolitical or macroeconomic shock, we should see strong demand for IT and engineering talent throughout 2014." The organization said it will use Facebook and Twitter to provide entrepreneurs with information, advice and resources, with the help of small business expert Rhonda Abrams. The campaign was inspired by the recently released third edition of Abrams' book, "Six-Week Start-Up."
