o Santa Clara-Based Crossbar Lands $25 Million in Third Round

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Crossbar, a Santa Clara-based developer of memory technology incubated by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, said on Monday it has raised $25 million in its third round of funding. Previous backers Artiman Ventures, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Northern Light Venture Capital and the University of Michigan took part in the round, along with new investors SAIF Partners, Korea Investment Partners, CBC-Capital and Tao Venture Capital Partners. Crossbar's Resistive RAM (RRAM) technology can be stacked in 3D, making it possible to store terabytes of data on a postage-stamp sized chip. The company, which emerged from stealth mode last August, plans to use the latest funds to complete manufacturing and licensing operations. It now has raised $50 million since its inception in 2010.

o Menlo Park-Based Accel-KKR Raises New $325 Million Fund

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Accel-KKR, a technology-focused private equity firm based in Menlo Park, said on Monday it has closed its second structured capital fund at $325 million. The new fund will continue its predecessor's focus on making minority equity investments in technology companies through senior equity and other structured securities. "The idea behind our Structured Capital funds developed over the years as we saw so many good businesses with great management teams where minority stakes -- as opposed to majority investments -- made sense," said Tom Barnds, the firm's managing director. Accel-KKR raised its first Structured Capital Fund, with $180 million in capital commitments, in 2011, and began raising the new fund earlier this year with a $250 million target.

o Report: More High-Tech Investments Going to Urban Startups

Toronto -- More and more high-tech investments are going to startups located in urban centers of the U.S., according to a new study by the Martin Prosperity Institute at the University of Toronto. The report found that that city centers accounted for more than half of all venture capital investment in a majority of major U.S. regions, and that concentrations of venture capital and startup activity are associated with higher levels of immigrants, gays and lesbians. "Startup activity in the U.S. is increasingly shifting back to America's cities," said study author Richard Florida. "With their creative class appeal, amenities and walkability, cities are now the center of America's entrepreneurial ecosystem for entrepreneurs and investors."
