o Palo Alto-Based Attensity Raises $90 Million, Names New CEO

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Attensity, a Palo Alto-based developer of natural language processing and sentiment analysis tools, said on Wednesday it has raised $90 million in a new round of funding from an unnamed international private equity fund and financial advisor firm. The company also said that Howard Lau, its chairman, will assume the additional role of CEO. He succeeds Kirsten Bay, who departed earlier this year to become the president and CEO of ISC8. Attensity said it will use the proceeds to fuel product development and bolster its sales, marketing and engineering teams. The company, which has so far focused primarily on social media analytics, said it plans to expand into areas such as brand reputation and the early detection of trends, business opportunities and threats. Clients include eBay, Yahoo, Microsoft, Verizon and Whirlpool.

o SBA Launches $2.5 Million Competition for Accelerators

Washington, DC -- The Small Business Administration (SBA) said it has launched a $2.5 million competition that aims to find the nation's top accelerators and incubators filling geographic gaps in parts of the country where there is less access to venture capital. Other prizes of $50,000 each will go to accelerators that are run by and support women or other underrepresented groups, as well as those supporting manufacturing. Over the coming months, the SBA said it will work with partners such as the Global Accelerator Network to host a number of Demo Days across the country, where accelerators can make pitches.
