Redwood City, Calif. -- Oracle, the Redwood City-based back-office software giant, is nearing a deal to acquire Maryland-based Micros Systems, a provider of information technology systems for the hospitality and retail industries, for more than $5 billion, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday. Citing people familiar with the matter, the news service said the two companies are in exclusive talks, with Oracle CEO Larry Ellison looking for acquisitions to boost sluggish sales. According to Bloomberg, they nearly combined six years ago before a deal fell through at the last moment. The news sent shares of Micros soaring 15% in Tuesday's heavy trading on the NASDAQ.
