o Santa Clara-Based GlobalFoundries to Buy IBM Business for $1.5 Billion
Santa Clara, Calif. -- GlobalFoundries, a Santa Clara-based provider of semiconductor manufacturing technology, said on Monday it will pay approximately $1.5 billion to acquire IBM's global commercial semiconductor technology business. The deal includes intellectual property, employees and technologies related to IBM Microelectronics. As part of the agreement, GlobalFoundries also will become IBM's exclusive server processor semiconductor technology provider for 22 nanometer, 14nm and 10nm semiconductors for the next 10 years. "We can now offer our customers a broader range of differentiated leading-edge 3D transistor and RF technologies, and we will also improve our design ecosystem to accelerate time-to-revenue for our customers," said GlobalFoundries CEO Sanjay Jha.

o ShoreTel Receives Unsolicited $540M Takeover Bid from Mitel Networks
Sunnyvale, Calif. -- ShoreTel, a Sunnyvale-based maker of IP phone systems and unified communications tools, said on Monday it has received an unsolicited $540 million takeover bid from Canada-based Mitel Networks. Mitel is offering $8.10 a share in cash under the deal, which sent company shares up more than 18% by midday. ShoreTel said in a statement that it will "carefully review and evaluate the proposal and determine the course of action that it believes is in the best interest of the company's stockholders." The company has retained Blackstone Advisory Partners as its financial advisor and Fenwick & West as its legal counsel.

o S.F.-Based CloudCannon Launches with $500,000 in Funding
San Francisco -- CloudCannon, the San Francisco-based developer of tools designed to streamlines the process of deploying a simple website, said on Monday it has officially launched at TechCrunch Disrupt in London after raising $500,000 from several New Zealand investors. Backers included Sam Morgan, Phil McCaw, Stephen Tindall and Simon Holdsworth. CloudCannon said it helps web designers more easily launch static websites by partnering with cloud storage providers, domain registrars and hosting companies. "We wanted to lift the bar on current website design, by taking out time intensive technical tasks and focusing on the creative aspects," said CEO Mike Neumegen.

San Jose, Calif. -- Marc Andreessen, the co-founder of venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, on Monday resigned from the board of San Jose-based eBay. He had served on the board for six years, but said the company's recent decision to spin off PayPal made this the right time to step down. "I have complete confidence in [CEO] John [Donahoe] and the board to lead eBay and PayPal through the process of embarking on independent paths in 2015," said Andreessen.

o Amazon.com Planning to Hire 80,000 Season Workers
Seattle -- Online retail giant Amazon.com said it plans to hire 80,000 seasonal workers in the U.S. this holiday season -- about 10,000 more than a year ago. The company said it needs the extra staff to deal with an expected increase in workload at its 50 U.S. fulfillment and more than 15 sortation centers. Amazon said it plans to convert many of the seasonal workers to full-time jobs after the holiday. The company currently operates nearby fulfillment centers in Tracy and Patterson.
