o Shares of Los Alto-Based Box Spike 65% Following IPO

Los Altos, Calif. -- Shares of Los Altos-based Box rose 65% on their first day of trading Friday, hours after the developer of an online file sharing and collaboration service priced its initial public offering above earlier estimates. The nearly 10-year-old company is selling 12.5 million shares for $14 each -- above expectations of $11-$13 set last week -- to raise $175 million. Shares, now trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "BOX," closed Friday at $23.15. The company's storage platform boasts more than 32 million registered users, with customers including Ameriprise Financial, Bechtel, Eli Lilly and Co., Gap, Schneider Electric, Sunbelt Rentals and Viacom. With plenty of competition from companies like Google and Amazon, however, Box has yet to turn a profit, posting a net loss of $168.6 million last year.

o Ford Opens New Palo Alto Research and Innovation Center

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Automaker Ford on Thursday opened its new Research and Innovation Center in Palo Alto, where the company will work to develop innovations in connectivity, mobility, autonomous vehicles, customer experience and big data. This is the third such facility for Ford, which also operates research centers in Michigan and Germany. By year end, the company expects to house 125 researchers, engineers and scientists at the facility, which is located at the Stanford Research Park. Ford has hired former Apple engineer Dragos Maciuca to lead the new center as senior technical leader for innovation. "Future mobility solutions will require fresh ideas and vigorous collaboration between researchers inside Ford and with other technology leaders outside the automotive industry,” said Raj Nair, Ford's group vice president of global product development and CTO. "Our Palo Alto research team will build on existing relationships with universities and technology companies, and forge new ones to help us create and apply the appropriate technology working together." Ford opened its first Silicon Valley office in 2012.

o Google Spent Record $16.83 Million in Lobbying Last Year

Santa Monica, Calif. -- Google spent a record $16.83 million lobbying DC lawmakers in 2014, according to a report by nonprofit public interest group Consumer Watchdog based on records filed with the Clerk of the House. Google, whose spending rose 20% from the prior year, topped a list of 15 large tech and communications companies monitored by the organization. Comcast was second (16.80 million), while Google-rival Microsoft, which used to regularly outspend the Internet giant, spent roughly half of what Google spent. Facebook, which has substantially increased its Washington presence over the past three years, also posted a company record, with spending increasing 45% to $9.34 million. All tolled, six of the 15 companies increased their spending, while the rest cut back from 2013 levels. "It's important to understand just how much money these companies are throwing around in Washington to buy the policies they want," said John Simpson, the privacy project director of Consumer Watchdog.

o Report: Yahoo and Bing Continue to Gain Search Share from Google

Charlottesville, Va. -- Yahoo and Bing continue to gain ground on Google in overall search share, with potential for larger gains down the road, according to a new report from Merkle | RKG. The firm said that Sunnyvale-based Yahoo will gain about 2% of U.S. paid search clicks from becoming the default search option on Firefox, a position Mountain View-based Google previously held for a decade. Rumors also persist that either Yahoo or Bing later this year could become the default search engine for Apple Safari, which accounts for almost half of all paid search traffic. "The result could be a shift of more than 10% of search market share away from Google," the firm said. Even so, Google remains the dominant search engine, with the company's search ads converting 43% better than Bing Ads, with a 39% higher average click-through-rate. Google also leads in mobile search, with 40% of Google search ad clicks coming from phones and tablets, compared with 36% for Bing Ads. The complete report is available at the link below.
