o San Francisco-Based Quid Raises $39 Million in Fourth Round

San Francisco -- Quid, a San Francisco-based developer of artificial intelligence technology, said it has raised $39 million in its fourth round of funding led by Liberty Interactive. ARTIS Ventures, Buchanan Investments, Subtraction Capital, Tiger Partners and Thomas H. Lee Ltd. Family Partnership II also participated, along with Quid board member Michael Patsalos-Fox and chairman and founding investor Charles Lho. Quid's web platform is designed to let users search and process millions of indexed documents, and visually map answers to questions that might previously have required weeks or months of research. "Quid is empowering organizations to immediately gain insights through machine-driven intelligence," said CEO Neville Crawley. "This funding round will allow us to further expand our product and engineering capabilities and to invest in sales and marketing to bring our technology to a broader set of clients." The company said more than 80 clients now are using its platform, which debuted in early 2014.

o Obama Taps Former Facebook Engineer as White House IT Director

Washington, DC -- President Obama on Thursday named a former Facebook engineer and open standards advocate to the newly created role of director of White House information technology. David Recordon, who had served as engineering director at the Menlo Park-based social media giant for nearly six years, now will be responsible for modernizing technology within the White House. "His considerable private sector experience and ability to deploy the latest collaborative and communication technologies will be a great asset to our work on behalf of the American people," wrote Obama. The job will include converging overlapping systems, modernizing software used to collaborate and deploying new technologies already in use in the private sector.

o WSJ: FTC Staff Recommended Suing Google Over Business Practices

Washington, DC -- Key staff members at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommended in 2012 that the agency file suit against Mountain View-based Google for using anticompetitive tactics and abusing its monopoly power, The Wall Street Journal reported. The 160-page report from the FTC's Bureau of Competition concluded that Google's conduct "has resulted -- and will result -- in real harm to consumers and to innovation in the online search and advertising markets." The FTC's commissioners, however, voted in early 2013 to end its investigation into Google, after the company agreed to voluntarily change some of its practices. The Journal reported that the agency had meant to keep the report private, but released it inadvertently.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Ticketfly launched Canadian operations in 2013, and now partners with more than 120 venues and promoters across the country. "We've seen tremendous growth in Canada since launching there a couple years ago, with ticket sales up 80% year-over-year in 2014 alone," said Andrew Dreskin, the co-founder and CEO of Ticketfly. "We believe that this transaction signals continued growth for us there."
