San Francisco -- Uber, the San Francisco-based operator of an on-demand car service, is in talks to potentially raise around $1.5 billion at a $50 billion valuation, The New York Times reported. Citing a person familiar with the discussions, the publication reported that talks are still in the early stages. Uber has raised more than $4 billion since its founding in 2009, including a $1.2 billion round in December that valued the fast-growing company at $40 billion.

o Survey: Hands-On Experience Seen as Key Factor in STEM Careers

Rockville, Md. -- The majority of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) professionals credit real-world, hands-on experience as the most critical factor in landing a STEM job, according to a new survey by the MdBio Foundation and The Science Advisory Board. All told, 58% of the 523 STEM professionals surveyed said they chose to pursue a scientific career before they entered college, and 53% said hands-on experience -- such as internships and summer jobs -- was the most important factor in landing a full-time STEM job. "These findings are a clarion call for stronger ties between K-12 schools and STEM employers," said Brian Gaines, the president and CEO of MdBio. "The survey makes clear we need a vastly improved plan to offer K-12 students more experiential STEM education opportunities if the U.S. is to be a global leader in STEM workforce development."
