o Campbell-Based Komprise Raises $6 Million in First Round

Campbell, Calif. -- Komprise, a Campbell-based developer of data management software, said it has raised $6 million in its first round of funding, led by Canaan Partners. The company said it will use the proceeds to build out its software, which uses analytics-driven adaptive automation to manage massive data growth across all storage silos. It also plans to expand its team, hiring in areas including product, engineering, sales and marketing. "The reality is most businesses today are struggling simply to keep up with the growth of their data," said Krishna Subramanian, the company's co-founder and COO. "Our solution helps businesses to organize, discover and unlock the value of unstructured data while streamlining costs."

Milpitas, Calif. -- Uphill Investment has again upped the ante in its battle for Milpitas-based Integrated Silicon Solution Inc. (ISSI). The firm said on Friday it will pay $22 a share for ISSI, topping a competing bid from San Jose-based Cypress Semiconductor that included $21.25 a share in cash plus a $0.10 a share ticking fee for each additional quarter required to obtain regulatory approval. The latest bid is $1 a share higher than ISSI's previous offer. Cypress and ISSI initially agreed to a $674 million deal on June 10, sparking the bidding war.

o San Francisco-Based Invuity Closes IPO After Raising $47.8 Million

San Francisco -- One week after pricing its initial public offering (IPO), San Francisco-based Invuity, a developer of surgical photonics, said late Thursday it has closed the offering after raising net proceeds of $47.8 million. All told, the company sold 4.6 million shares -- including 600,000 purchased by underwriters to cover overallotments -- for $12 each. Shares began trading on the NASDAQ Global Market under the ticker symbol "IVTY" on Monday. Piper Jaffray, Leerink Partners and Stifel are serving as lead underwriters. Invuity's medical technology uses advanced photonics to provide surgeons to help better visualize surgical cavities during surgical procedures. The news comes four months after the company raised $20 million in a round of funding led by Wellington Management.

o Media Companies Team with Va. Tech to Test Drones for News Coverage

Bealeton, Va. -- A coalition of 15 media companies have teamed with Virginia Tech to begin testing small drones for the purposes of gathering news. The flights are the first in a series of controlled tests involving real-life scenarios, to simulate news events that the media can safely report on using drone technology. It marks the first time reporters and photographers are at the controls of the aircraft to test news gathering. "This program will allow us to use these new tools safely and effectively while also benefiting from the many new angles of visual newsgathering," said Sandy MacIntyre, vice president and director of global video for the Associated Press. Virginia Tech is one of the Federal Aviation Administration's designated test sites for drone research.
