o S.F.-Based Lumos Labs to Pay $2M to Settle FTC Charges of Deception

San Francisco -- Lumos Labs, the San Francisco-based neuroscience gaming company behind the Lumosity "brain training" program, will pay $2 million to settle charges by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that it deceived customers with unfounded claims. The FTC said the company falsely claimed that its online and mobile games could help users perform better at work and in school, and reduce or delay cognitive impairment associated with age and other serious health conditions. "Lumosity preyed on consumers' fears about age-related cognitive decline, suggesting their games could stave off memory loss, dementia and even Alzheimer's disease," said Jessica Rich, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection. "But Lumosity simply did not have the science to back up its ads." In addition to the monetary settlement, the company must notify subscribers of the FTC action and provide them with an easy way to cancel their auto-renewal to avoid future billing.
