o Study: Mobile Internet Usage Now Exceeds Desktop for First Time Ever

San Francisco -- Internet usage by mobile and tablet devices now exceeds that of desktops for the first time ever, according to a new report from web analytics company StatCounter. In October, mobile and tablet devices accounted for 51.3% of Internet usage worldwide, compared with 48.7% for desktops. Despite the rapid growth of mobile devices, however, desktops are still the primary mode of Internet usage in mature markets such as the U.S. and U.K. "This should be a wake up call especially for small businesses, sole traders and professionals to make sure that their websites are mobile friendly. Many older websites are not," said StatCounter CEO Aodhan Cullen. "Mobile compatibility is increasingly important not just because of growing traffic but because Google favors mobile friendly websites for its mobile search results."
