o Fremont-Based Shockwave Medical Raises $45 Million in Third Round

Fremont, Calif. -- Shockwave Medical, the Fremont-based developer of a device designed to selectively target hardened calcium in patients with cardiovascular disease, said on Tuesday it has raised $45 million in its third round of funding. Sectoral Asset Management led the round, which also included participation from T. Rowe Price Associates and previous backers Sofinnova Partners, Venrock, RA Capital, Deerfield and Ally Bridge Group. The company plans to use the proceeds to further develop its Lithoplasty balloon catheter platform into new therapeutic areas, as well as expand commercialization of the technology for the treatment of peripheral vascular disease in both the U.S. and Europe. "This financing will enable the company to continue taking the steps necessary to ensure the technology reaches its full potential," said co-founder and CEO Daniel Hawkins.

San Francisco -- Helpshift, the San Francisco-based developer of a platform designed to help businesses provide customer support on mobile devices, said on Tuesday it has landed a new investment from Cisco Investments as part of its second round. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The companies also will explore opportunities to integrate Helpshift's in-app customer support tools with Cisco's contact center software. o Apple to Replace Batteries of Some Defective iPhone 6 Devices

Cupertino, Calif. -- Apple is offering to replace the batteries of what it calls a "very small number" of iPhone 6s that the company said have been unexpectedly shutting down. The issue -- which the Cupertino-based company said doesn't relate to safety, as was the case recently with some Samsung phones -- only has been seen in a limited serial number range of devices manufactured between September-October 2015. Apple said that customers with affected devices should either visit one of the company's retail stores or an authorized service provider, or contact the company's tech support. Full details are at the link below.

o FTC Orders Warner Bros. to Disclose Payments to Online Influencers

Washington, DC -- The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on Monday approved a final order requiring Warner Bros. Home Entertainment to disclose payments to online influencers. A complaint announced in July alleged that the entertainment company deceived consumers during a marketing campaign for the video game "Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor," by failing to disclose that it paid online "influencers" thousands of dollars to post positive gameplay videos on YouTube and social media. Over the course of the campaign, the sponsored videos were viewed more than 5.5 million times. The FTC also alleged Warner Bros. gave influencers a free advance-release version of the game and told them how to promote it. The company also allegedly required the influencers to promote the game in a positive way and not to disclose any bugs or glitches they found. Under the final order, Warner Bros. is barred from failing to make such disclosures and cannot misrepresent that sponsored content, including gameplay videos, are the objective, independent opinions of video game enthusiasts or influencers.

o Report: IT and Engineering Job Growth Continued to Slow in October

Alexandria, Va. -- Job growth in the U.S. information technology and engineering fields continued to slow in October, according to new figures from the TechServe Alliance. All told, the number of IT jobs grew 0.1 percent sequentially last month to 5.17 million -- up 2.9% since October 2015. Engineering employment also remained sluggish, growing only 0.02 percent sequentially to 2.54 million. "While the rate of growth in IT employment is at its low ebb for the year, the slowdown is not uniformly distributed across all skill sets and sectors," said Mark Roberts, CEO of the TechServe Alliance. "The unemployment rate for some IT occupations is under 2% -- below what would be considered full employment. Further, there remains a significant imbalance between supply and demand for highly sought after skill sets in both IT and engineering."
