o Oakland-Based ReadyTech Invests in Dutch Startup Surfly

Oakland -- ReadyTech, an Oakland-based provider of online training software to technology companies, said it has invested $1.05 million in Dutch startup Surfly, a developer of real-time web sharing technology. As part of the deal, ReadyTech will use Surfly's co-browsing product as a key component in its online training software. In addition, the companies plans to share resources and jointly contribute to the development of Surfly's products. "Co-browsing is a critical technology for providing innovative training solutions to the online training market," said CEO Kevin Woodward. "This investment and relationship allows both companies to focus our efforts on a single co-browsing product and provide better solutions in less time to each of our markets."

o Shareholders of Milpitas-Based Intersil Approve Sale to Renesas

Milpitas, Calif. -- Shareholders of Milpitas-based Intersil, a provider of power management and precision analog technologies, on Thursday approved the company's $3.2 billion sale to Renesas Electronics, a Japanese supplier of semiconductor components. The deal, for $22.50 a share in cash, was first announced in September. It now is expected to close during the first half of 2017, pending approval by Chinese and U.S. regulators. Renesas said combining its microcontroller and system-on-chip products and technologies with Intersil's power management and precision analog capabilities will bolster its ability to address markets such as automotive, industrial, cloud computing, healthcare and the Internet of Things (IoT).

o Report: 17% of Bay Area CIOs Plans to Expand IT Teams

San Francisco -- Seventeen percent of Bay Area technology executives expect to expand their IT teams in the first half of 2017, according to a new report by Robert Half Technology. In addition, 63% plan to hire only for open IT roles, 15% plan to put hiring plans on hold and 5% expect to reduce their IT staffing levels in the first six months of the year. Aside from hiring, nearly a third of those surveyed named maintaining the security of their IT systems and safeguarding company information as their top priority, with upgrading existing systems a close second. "Hiring for IT talent in the Bay Area continues to be very competitive, especially as new companies move into the market and try to compete for the best candidates," said Heather Johnston, the Bay Area regional vice president for Robert Half Technology. "We're seeing great demand for talent in the healthcare, financial services and technology industries."

o FTC: More Than 2.7M AT&T Customers to Get Refunds Through Settlement

Washington, DC -- The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said it will provide more than $88 million in refunds to over 2.7 million AT&T customers who had third-party charges added to their mobile bills without their consent, a tactic known as "mobile cramming." The refunds relate to 2014 settlements with AT&T and the companies behind two of the cramming schemes, Tatto and Acquinity. It will mark the most money ever returned to consumers in a mobile cramming case. Nearly 2.5 million current AT&T customers will receive a credit on their bill within the next 75 days, and more than 300,000 former customers will receive a check. The average refund amount will be $31. "AT&T received a high volume of complaints related to mobile cramming prior to the FTC and other federal and state agencies stepping in on consumers' behalf," said FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez. "I am pleased that consumers are now being refunded their money and that AT&T has changed its mobile billing practices." According to the FTC's complaint, AT&T placed unauthorized third-party charges on its customers' phone bills, usually in amounts of $9.99 a month, for ringtones and text message subscriptions containing love tips, horoscopes, and "fun facts." The FTC alleged that AT&T kept at least 35% of the charges it imposed on its customers.

o Survey: Majority of U.S. Adults Not Feeling Overloaded by Information

Washington, DC -- The large majority of Americans don't consider information overload a problem for them, according to a new report by the Pew Research Center. All told, 77% of adults surveyed say they like having an abundance of information at their fingertips, while just 20% say they feel overloaded by information, down 27% from a decade ago. The survey found that those who own more tech devices are also the ones who feel more on top of the data and media flows in their lives. Conversely, those feeling information overload tend to have less technology, are poorer, less educated and older. The complete report, based on a survey of 1,520 U.S. adults, is available at the link below.
