o San Francisco-Based Carbon Health Raises $6.5 Million in First Round

San Francisco -- Carbon Health, the San Francisco-based developer of a mobile connected healthcare network, said on Wednesday it has raised $6.5 million in its first round of funding, led by BuildersVC. Other participants included Javelin Venture Partners, Two Sigma Ventures and Bullpen Capital, as well as angel investors Aaron Patzer, Elad Gil and Russ Fradin. The company said it will use the proceeds to accelerate development and start rolling out its platform to independent healthcare practices nationwide. The platform integrates with clinics, insurance companies, pharmacies, labs and medical imaging centers, giving patients access to all of their providers through their mobile devices. The technology allows them to carry out tasks such as scheduling appointments, making payments, filling prescriptions and accessing medical records. "We've been perfecting the model for the past six months through our primary care clinic in San Francisco," said founder and CEO Eren Bali. "I'm excited to finally expand our practice in the Bay Area and roll out our practices nationwide."

o South San Francisco-Based Antiva Biosciences Lands $22M in Third Round

South San Francisco -- Antiva Biosciences, a South San Francisco-based biopharmaceutical firm developing topical drugs for the treatment of pre-cancerous lesions caused by HPV infection, said it has raised $22 million in its third round of funding, led by Brace Pharma Capital. New investors NS Investment, Osage University Partners and Alexandria Venture Investments, as well as previous backers Canaan Partners and Sofinnova Ventures also participated. Vinzenz Ploerer, the president and CEO of Brace Pharma Capital, has joined the company's board of directors. Antiva said it will use the proceeds to advance its lead drug candidate, known as ABI-1968 into clinical studies. "Despite the introduction of prophylactic HPV vaccines more than 10 years ago, there are tens of millions of women living with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, and over 260,000 deaths globally from cervical cancer each year," said Gail Maderis, president and CEO of Antiva. "Our goal is to make treating this precancerous condition as routine as treating a yeast infection." This financing will help us advance, bringing it one step closer to the women who need it."

Report: Millions of College Emails and Passwords Being Shared on Dark Web

Washington, DC -- Cyber criminals are sharing credentials to .edu email accounts at an alarming rate, according to a new report from the nonprofit Digital Citizens Alliance. For the report, researchers fromsecurity firm ID Agent reviewed email domains for the 300 largest higher education institutions in the U.S., and found nearly 14 million email addresses and passwords belonging to faculty, staff, students and alumni on the dark web over a span of eight years. Nearly 80% have been discovered over the past year, alone. Credentials from the University of Michigan topped the list, followed by Penn State University, the University of Minnesota, Michigan State University, The Ohio State University, the University of Illinois, New York University, the University of Florida, Virginia Tech University and Harvard University. Most of the .edu addresses are fake, a hacktivist, who used the name "DeadMellox" told Digital Citizens, adding that "most people simply create and then sell them, instead of actually taking them from a site." The fake e-mails then can be used to scam others in the university and college communities, or to take advantage of discounts offered on software and various other products. "Higher education institutions have deployed resources and talent to make university communities safer, but highly skilled and opportunistic cyber criminals make it a challenge to protect large groups of highly-desirable digital targets," said Adam Benson, the organization's deputy executive director. "We shared this information from cybersecurity researchers to create more awareness of just what kinds of things threat actors are capable of doing with an .edu account."
