o Redwood City-Based C3 IoT Raises Funding at $1.4 billion Valuation

Redwood City, Calif. -- C3 IoT, the Redwood City-based creator of an Internet-of-Things development platform, said it has raised an unspecified amount of new funding at a $1.4 billion pre-money valuation. Breyer Capital led the company's fifth round, which also included participation from TPG, Sutter Hill, Wildcat Venture Partners, Pat House and Thomas Siebel. "The funds will be used to expand C3 IoT's distribution capacity, further develop our partner ecosystem, and enhance and expand customer service capacity." said Ed Abbo, the company's president and chief technology officer (CTO), in a statement. C3 IoT has over 20 industrial-scale deployments with more than 100 million connected IoT sensors. The company raised $70 million in its fourth round, led by TPG Growth, last September.

o S.F.-Based Twitter to Begin Identifying, Penalizing Abusive Posters

San Francisco -- Hoping to slow what many perceive as a rising tide of abusive posts, San Francisco-based social media giant Twitter said this week it plans to start using its technology to identify the accounts of verified trolls. Once identified, the company said it will limit their account functionality for a set amount of time, such as allowing only their followers to see their tweets. Twitter said it will only take such action if a user is engaging in patterns of abusive behavior or repeatedly tweeting, without solicitation, at non-followers. "Our platform supports the freedom to share any viewpoint, but if an account continues to repeatedly violate the Twitter Rules, we will consider taking further action," the company said in a blog post. "We aim to only act on accounts when we're confident, based on our algorithms, that their behavior is abusive."

o Space Agency NASA Releases Newest Catalog of Free Public Software

Washington, DC -- NASA on Friday released its 2017-2018 software catalog, which offers the public free use of many of the software products the agency uses to explore space and gain a better understanding of the universe. Available in both hard copy and online, the third edition of the publication includes tools focused on areas such as data processing and storage, business systems, operations, propulsion and aeronautics. A number of software packages are being presented for release for the first time, with each entry accompanied with a plain language description of what it does. All are free of charge to the public, without any royalty or copyright fees. "Software has been a critical component of each of NASA's mission successes and scientific discoveries," said Dan Lockney, NASA's technology transfer program executive. "In fact, more than 30% of all reported NASA innovations are software. We're… excited at the prospect of seeing them implemented in new and creative ways." NASA in 2014 became the first federal agency to publish its software catalog. A searchable PDF of the catalog is at the top link below.
