o Palo Alto-Based Confluent Raises $50 Million in New Funding Round

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Confluent, the Palo Alto-based developer of a streaming platform designed to help clients make better use of real-time data, said on Tuesday it has raised $50 million in a new round of funding, led by Sequoia. Previous backers Benchmark and Index Ventures also participated in the round, which increases the company's total funding to $81 million. Matt Miller, a partner at Sequoia, has joined the company's board of directors. Founded by the creators of open source Apache Kafka, Confluent has developed a platform designed to let large organizations move data from isolated systems into a real-time data pipeline, where they can act on it immediately. The company, which tripled its headcount last year while adding clients such as Priceline.com, Surescripts, TiVo and Zopa, said it will use the latest proceeds to further its vision of "placing streaming platforms at the heart of every modern business."

o San Francisco-Based Fitbit Shuffles Leadership, Refocuses Operations

San Francisco -- Vowing to "reignite growth and return to profitability," San Francisco-based Fitbit, the maker of connected health and fitness devices, on Tuesday made several leadership changes and announced plans to refocus around the areas of consumer health and fitness and enterprise health. The company has promoted Samir Kapoor from vice president to senior vice president of device engineering, and named Cisco, Nokia and HP-veteran Jeff Devine as executive vice president of operations. "These new roles will help us increase speed and efficiency throughout the company," said CEO James Park. Fitbit also announced the departure of Woody Scal as chief business officer and Tim Roberts as executive vice president of interactive. In addition to the personnel changes, the company said it will focus on delivering a streamlined set of health and fitness devices, entering new markets such as the smartwatch category and offering premium software and services that provide more personalized insights and guidance. The company also plans to expand in the enterprise health arena, where it plans to work more with insurance companies, employers, health systems and other healthcare partners. "2017 is a transition year and while we continue to lead the connected health and fitness market, we must take important steps to chart our return to profitability and growth," said Park.

o Android Challenges Windows as Most Popular Operating System

San Francisco -- For the first time, Google's Android is now challenging Microsoft Windows as the world's most popular operating system (OS) in terms of total Internet usage across desktop, laptop, tablet and mobile, according to a new report from independent web analytics company StatCounter. Windows remained No. 1 in OS usage market share in February with 38.6%, but Android came within striking distance on 37.4%."The idea of Android almost matching Windows would have been unthinkable five years ago," said StatCounter CEO Aodhan Cullen. "In Jan. 2012, Windows held 82% global internet usage share compared to just 2.2% for Android." He said the staggering change has been a function of the growth of smartphones to access the Internet, combined with a slowdown in sales of traditional PCs, as well as the impact of Asia on the global market. Windows still dominates the worldwide operating system desktop market (PC and laptop) with a 84.1% internet usage share in February. StatCounter recently reported that, in October, Internet usage by mobile and tablet devices exceeded desktops and laptops worldwide for the first time.

o Survey: Shanghai and New York Seen as Top Challengers to Silicon Valley

New York -- Technology industry executives expect Shanghai, New York and Tokyo to challenge Silicon Valley as the world's top innovation hub over the next four years, according to a new survey by KPMG. Researchers asked more than 800 tech industry leaders from 15 countries which cities -- besides Silicon Valley-San Francisco -- will be seen as tech hubs, based on innovation, leadership and market trends. Beijing and London came in at Nos. 4 and 5, with Washington, DC; Berlin; and Chicago (tied for sixth); Tel Aviv and Boston rounding out the top 10. "What we have seen emerge over time is the result of countries and cities striving to replicate and build on the Silicon Valley tech innovation blueprint, and their increasing degree of success," said Tim Zanni, the global and U.S. chair of KPMG's Technology, Media and Telecommunications practice. "One can debate whether or not replicating Silicon Valley is possible, but the benefits of the effort are undeniable." Respondents also indicated their choices as the top global technology innovation visionary. Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk topped the list, with Apple CEO Tim Cook second, followed by Alibaba Chairman Jack Ma, Alphabet CEO Larry Page and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who tied for third. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stood alone in the sixth spot, with Bill Gates and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg tied for seventh, followed by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, ninth.
