o S.F.-Based SitterFriends Lands Investment from Former Cisco Executive
San Francisco -- SitterFriends, a San Francisco-based childcare startup, said on Monday it has landed a new investment from Prem Jain, a former senior vice president at Cisco. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. He also will serve as an advisor and mentor to company executives. Set to launch in June, SitterFriends is the developer of a mobile app that lets users book and review baby sitters in their local communities. Jain previously helped build and scale four startups -- Crescendo Communication, Andiamo Systems, Nuova Systems and, most recently, Insieme Networks. "His expertise and wealth of knowledge in running startups is going to be extremely valuable for us as we deploy and scale," said founder and CEO Fahad Jalal. SitterFriends last month also announced an investment from Wally Rhines, the chairman and CEO of Mentor Graphics.

o Reports: San Francisco-Based Lyft On Verge of Raising $500 Million
San Francisco -- Lyft, the San Francisco-based on-demand car service, is on the verge of raising $500 million at a $7.5 billion valuation, The Wall Street Journal reported. The valuation is up about $2 billion from early last year, according to an unnamed person familiar with the matter. Recode also added that the company may raise up to $100 million before officially closing the round. Lyft, which primarily is backed by Andreessen Horowitz, currently operates in approximately 300 U.S. cities, and recently has taken advantage of a series of public relations problems suffered by chief-rival Uber.

o Survey: Majority Want Government Agencies to Strengthen Cyber Defense
Washington, DC -- More than three-quarters of U.S. citizens are concerned about the privacy and security of their personal data, and nearly two-thirds say they would feel more confident if the government strengthened its cyber defense mechanisms, according to a new survey by Accenture. The survey -- in which nearly one-third of respondents said they had been a victim of cybercrime -- found that three-quarters of citizens lack confidence in the government's ability to keep their data private and secure, and almost two-thirds lack confidence in the ability of law-enforcement to investigate and prosecute cybercrimes. "This survey confirms that `cyber insecurity' is pervasive, with citizens feeling concerned and vulnerable," said Lalit Ahluwalia, who leads Accenture's security work with state and local government clients in North America. "All organizations must make cybersecurity a top priority and move to deploy end-end cyber defense solutions to combat threats to data, and to ensure citizen confidence when engaging with government agencies."

Arlington, Va. -- Twelve leaders in the consumer technology industry, including the inventor of the Segway and the former chairman and CEO of the company that operated RadioShack, have been named to the 2017 class of the Consumer Technology Association's Consumer Technology (CT) Hall of Fame. The class includes: Dean Kamen (FIRST, Segway), Ray Kurzweil (Google), Arlene Harris (GreatCall), Mike Lazardis (BlackBerry/RIM), Mitch Mohr (Celluphone), Charles Tandy (Tandy/Radio Shack), Darrell Issa (Congressman, Directed Electronics), Marcia Grand (TWICE), and the teams of Leonardo Chiariglione and Hiroshi Yasuda (JPEG/MPEG) and Frank McIntosh and Gordon Gow (McIntosh Laboratory). Inductees were selected by a panel of media and industry professionals, who judged nominations submitted by manufacturers, retailers and industry journalists. The class will be inducted Nov. 7 in New York.
