o Palo Alto-Based Cloudera Raises $225 Million in IPO, Stock Surges 20%

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Shares of Palo Alto-based Cloudera rose 20% by late Friday, hours after the developer of a hybrid open source software platform for data management, machine learning and advanced analytics raised $225 million in its initial public offering (IPO). The company priced 15 million shares at $15 each, exceeding its previous guidance of $12-$14. Still, the price -- which valued the company at approximately $1.9 billion -- was less than half of what Intel paid when it invested in the company in 2014. Shares began trading Friday morning on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "CLDR." Cloudera is primarily backed by Intel, Accel Partners, Meritech Capital Partners, In-Q-Tel, Greylock Partners, Ignition, MSD Capital and T. Rowe Price. For the fiscal year ended Jan. 31, the company generated $261.0 million in revenue and a net loss of $187.3 million. This marks just third IPO from the Bay Area this year, following the market debuts of San Francisco-based Mulesoft and Okta.

o Thales to Acquire San Mateo-Based Guavus in Deal Worth Up to $215 Million

San Mateo, Calif. -- Thales, the French aerospace and defense technology giant, said on Friday it will acquire San Mateo-based Guavus, a developer of real-time big data analytics, in a deal worth up to $215 million. A portion of the price is dependant upon the company hitting sales growth targets. Thales said the acquisition will bolster its offerings related to the processing and predictive analysis of big data, which the company called "an increasingly critical factor in real-time decision-making." "The application to Thales's core businesses of Guavus's technologies and expertise in big data analytics will strengthen our ability to support the digital transformation of our customers, whether in aeronautics, space, rail signaling, defense or security," said CEO Patrice Caine. Founded in 2006, Guavus has focused on the telecom and cable network operators' market, and analyzes more than 5 petabytes of data for customers each day. The company, which has 250 employees, supports more than 20 major operators, including AT&T, Rogers, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon.

o Facebook and Google Identified as Victims of $100 Million Phishing Fraud

Washington, DC -- Both Menlo Park-based Facebook and Mountain View-based Google were victims of a $100 million payment fraud scheme, in which a scammer impersonated a large Asian hardware manufacturer to trick accounting departments into paying made-up invoices, Fortune reported. The Justice Department had announced an arrest in the case last month, but only identified the victims as U.S. technology giants. Now, both Facebook and Google have confirmed their identities. According to Fortune, the companies thought they were dealing with a well-known Asian supplier called Quanta Computer. The Justice Department alleges that Evaldas Rimasauskas of Lithuania forged Quanta's email addresses, invoices and corporate stamps, convincing the two companies to make large payments over a two-year period in what essentially amounted to a phishing scam. Rimasauskas, who's currently facing extradition proceedings in Lithuania, denies the allegations. Both Facebook and Google said they have recouped the bulk of the money and are now cooperating with authorities.

o 123RF Acquires Pixlr from San Rafael-Based Autodesk

San Rafael, Calif. -- 123RF, a Chicago-based digital stock photo agency, said on Friday it has acquired Pixlr, developer of a popular cloud and mobile photo editor, from San Rafael-based Autodesk. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Founded in 2008, Pixlr offers cloud-based image tools and utilities such as Pixlr Editor, Pixlr Express, the Pixlr iOS mobile app and Pixlr-O-Matic. Autodesk acquired the company in 2011, and has since grown its user base 20-fold. "As part of our ongoing business model transition, Autodesk has decided to focus development resources on our core product portfolio, so we were pleased to find in 123RF a partner who is committed to supporting the Pixlr community and investing in ongoing enhancements to the product," said Thomas Heermann, Autodesk's senior director of digital arts. Inmagine Group, the parent of 123RF, said the acquisition will boost its unique monthly active users towards the 50 million mark, in addition to more than 100 million installs of Pixlr's mobile apps.
