o TDK Completes $1.3 Billion Deal for San Jose-Based InvenSense

San Jose, Calif. -- Japanese electronics giant TDK said on Thursday it has completed its $1.3 billion acquisition of San Jose-based InvenSense, a developer of MEMS sensor platforms for the consumer electronics and industrial markets. Under the deal, first announced late last year, TDK paid $13 a share in cash The acquisition is expected to help the company strengthen its product line-ups and technologies, allowing it to become a stronger player in the IoT, automotive and ICT markets. "By merging TDK's strengths in magnetic sensor technologies, the extensive portfolio of sensor products… with InvenSense's leading sensor and software platforms, we will be able to bolster TDK's sensor business, one of our strategic growth areas," said Shigenao Ishiguro, the president and CEO of TDK. Behrooz Abdi will continue to lead InvenSense as its CEO, also serving as general manager of the MEMS Sensors Business Group of TDK's newly formed Sensor Systems Business Co.

o Menlo Ventures Closes New $450 Million Technology Fund

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Menlo Ventures, the Menlo Park-based technology venture capital firm, said on Thursday it has closed a new $450 million fund dedicated to investing in early-stage consumer, enterprise and frontier technologies. The new fund, Menlo Ventures XIV, increases the firm's total capital under management to more than $5 billion, and coincides with the opening of a new San Francisco office. Menlo said its entire staff now will split time between the new office and its Menlo Park headquarters. Menlo said it plans to invest 80% of the fund in core areas like marketplaces, cloud infrastructure, SaaS, fintech and cybersecurity with the other 20% going toward burgeoning areas such as artificial intelligence, computational biology, robotics and drone technology. Approximately half the fund will go toward seed and first rounds, with the firm also allocating $15 million for its Menlo Talent Fund, aimed at promising seed-stage ideas.

San Jose, Calif. -- Aporeto, the San Jose-based developer of cloud-native security tools, said on Thursday it has raised $11.2 million in its first round of funding, led by Norwest Venture Partners. Matthew Howard, a managing partner at Norwest, has joined the company's board of directors. The new round comes on the heels of a $3.3 million seed round, led by Wing Venture Capital. Aporeto's products, scheduled for production deployment later this year, utilize containers?,? microservices and serverless architectures to provide security for cloud-native applications. Dimitri Stiliadis, the co-founder and CEO of Aporeto, called the technology "the first developer-centric, enterprise-grade security solution that enables the deployment of trusted cloud applications in untrusted environments."

o San Francisco-Based Conversa Raises $8 Million in First Round of Funding

San Francisco -- Conversa, the San Francisco-based developer of a healthcare platform designed to improve communications between doctors and patients, said it has landed $8 million in its first round of funding, led by Northwell Ventures, the investment arm of Northwell Health, New York's largest healthcare system. Epic Ventures, Healthgrades and previous investors also contributed to the round, which the company will use to bolster its product capabilities and clinical conversation library, enhance its partner operations and expand its staff. Joseph Schulman, the executive director of Northwell Health, and Steven Lindseth, an advisor to several academic medical centers and Triple Tree Capital Partners, will join the company's board of directors. Conversa's platform is designed to let healthcare organizations deliver automated, personalized doctor-patient conversation experiences. The company has a library of more than 50 conversation programs that include asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), congestive heart failure, diabetes, hypertension and joint replacement.

o San Francisco-Based Distil Networks Acquires Are You A Human

San Francisco -- Distil Networks, a San Francisco-based developer of bot detection and mitigation tools, said on Thursday it has acquired Detroit-based Are You A Human, a developer of technology designed to analyze and understand how humans interact with the Internet. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Founded in 2010, Are You A Human uses its technology to analyze real time interaction data, such as mouse movements and scroll patterns, combined with longitudinal data and fingerprinting metrics, to determine whether a visitor to a website is a human or a bot. More than 1 million website use the tools to help validate their traffic. Distil said it plans to integrate the company's technology and biometric interaction dataset into its Bot Defense Platform. In addition, Distil said it has launched a free product called Distil Bot Discovery for Google Analytics, which leverages the technology. "We are bringing on a team of experienced software engineers and data scientists who have dedicated the past seven years to understanding the bot problem plaguing online businesses," said Distil co-founder and CEO Rami Essaid.
