o Facebook to Hire 3,000 in Bid to Keep Violent Videos Off Social Network

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Responding to a growing number of Facebook users posting videos and live feeds of murders and suicides, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on Wednesday his Menlo Park-based company plans to hire an additional 3,000 employees over the next year to help keep violent videos off the social network. The new "reviewers" -- in additional to approximately 4,500 already in place -- also will help remove content such as hate speech and child exploitation. And Zuckerberg said Facebook also plans to roll out new tools making it easier to report inappropriate posts, as well as contact law enforcement. The moves come a month after a man, later dubbed the "Facebook killer," posted a live feed of him shooting an elderly man in Cleveland. "Over the last few weeks, we've seen people hurting themselves and others on Facebook -- either live or in video posted later," wrote Zuckerberg in a Facebook post. "It's heartbreaking, and I've been reflecting on how we can do better for our community. If we're going to build a safe community, we need to respond quickly." Zuckerberg pointed to an incident last week in which a user was considering suicide while on Facebook Live. "We immediately reached out to law enforcement, and they were able to prevent him from hurting himself," he said. "In other cases, we weren't so fortunate."

o Mountain View-Based Quotient Technology to Acquire Crisp Mobile

Mountain View, Calif. -- Quotient Technology, a Mountain View-based digital promotions, media and analytics company, said it will pay up to $57.5 million in cash and stock to acquire New York-based Crisp Mobile, a provider of mobile marketing and advertising services. The deal, expected to close by midyear, includes an upfront payment of $33 million, and well as an additional $24.5 million in potential earn-outs, payable upon the achievement of certain financial milestones. "Crisp is a natural fit for Quotient as we expand our efforts in shopper marketing," said Mir Aamir, the president and chief operating officer (COO) of Quotient. "We believe the power of our retail network and proprietary shopper data, combined with Crisp's ability to create and deliver premium and effective mobile ads… puts us in a strong position as the industry rapidly shifts to digital." Crisp, which is backed by Meritage Funds, Intel Capital and EDB Investments, will operate as its own brand, with CEO Jason Young continuing to run the business.

Washington, DC -- The U.S. technology industry exported an estimated $309 billion of products and services last year, a slight decrease from 2015 figures, according to a new report from CompTIA. All told, the number included about $202 billion of tech products, or 14% of all U.S. manufacturing exports. Tech trailed only transportation and motor vehicles (19%) in manufacturing exports. Baird Commentary: How the IoT Revolution Is Driving Consolidation

In a recent commentary on the ever-evolving Internet of Things (IoT) revolution, Baird's senior technology bankers discuss how the proliferation of IoT-enabled software and services and ongoing industry consolidation.

Today's sophisticated IoT software and systems not only connect disparate devices, they collect, verify and cleanse data -- diminishing the long-time challenge of cutting through "noise" inherent to data aggregation and facilitating in-depth analysis and application of the collected information into actionable intelligence. This IoT revolution is quickly catching up to its hype by transforming businesses across many sectors. The value of IoT technology has become imperative, and growing demand is fueling tremendous acquisition interest from a diverse range of buyers, pushing competition higher and accelerating consolidation in the space.
