o Facebook Says Fake Russian Accounts Bought 3,000 Political Ads

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Facing questions about how Russia may have used social media to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election, Facebook said on Wednesday it has discovered roughly 3,000 ad buys from inauthentic accounts and pages likely operated out of that country. The company said it found approximately $100,000 in ad spending from June 2015 to May 2017 connected to about 470 questionable Russian accounts, all affiliated with one another. While the bulk of the ads didn't specifically reference the U.S. election, they focused on amplifying divisive social and political messages, touching on topics from LGBT matters and race issues to immigration and gun rights. About a quarter of the ads were geographically targeted, and the majority were purchased prior to the election. All have since been deleted, and their associated accounts shut down. "We have shared our findings with U.S. authorities investigating these issues, and we will continue to work with them as necessary," wrote Alex Stamos, Facebook's chief security officer, in a blog post. Earlier this year, Facebook announced technology improvements for detecting fake accounts and a series of actions to reduce misinformation and false news.

o Santa Clara-Based Gridtential Lands $11 Million in Second Round

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Gridtential, a Santa Clara-based developer of energy storage technologies, said on Thursday it has raised $11 million in its second round of funding, led by 1955 Capital. Several U.S. and Chinese battery manufacturers, including East Penn Manufacturing, Crown Battery Manufacturing, Leoch International and Power-Sonic, and previous investors also participated. Andrew Chung, founder and managing partner at 1955 Capital, will join the company's board of directors. The company said it will use the proceeds to expand development and licensing agreements in a bid to meet growing global demand for rechargeable batteries in the automotive, backup power, grid solutions and mobility industries. Gridtential said it has developed a new battery architecture that combines the advantages of lead-acid batteries with the advantages associated with lithium-ion. The company said it has replaced the battery's traditional lead grids with plated silicon wafers similar to solar cells.

o San Francisco-Based Climate Corp. Completes Sale of Precision Planting

San Francisco -- The Climate Corp., a San Francisco-based unit of Monsanto that develops digital tools for farmers, said it has completed its sale of Precision Planting to Georgia-based AGCO. Financial terms of the deal, first announced in July, were not disclosed. Precision Planting makes equipment designed to help farmers get the best yields from their crops through better seed spacing, depth control and root systems. Climate Corp. also said it is in the process of solidifying a data connectivity agreement with AGCO that will enable connectivity between AGCO's equipment and its Climate FieldView digital agriculture platform. The company said the deal would allow more farmers to get their data in one place to manage inputs and measure the outcome of their agronomic decisions.

o S.F.-Based ARTIS Ventures Leads $10M Round for Excision BioTherapeutics

San Francisco -- ARTIS Ventures, a San Francisco-based venture capital firm, said it has led a new $10 million round of funding for Philadelphia-based Excision BioTherapeutics, a developer of gene editing therapeutics for the treatment of diseases caused by neurotropic viruses. The company will use the seed round to enter into human clinical trials with its HIV-1 targeted CRISPR platform, as well as extend its approach to other viruses. "Excision's mission has always been to advance gene editing therapeutics into safe and efficacious medicines that will eradicate or disrupt viral genes in human patients," said Thomas Malcolm, the company's founder, president and CEO. "The support of ARTIS, and other investors, is both timely and critical as we enter the next phase, which is clinical trials."

o Amazon Launches Search for Second Headquarters in North America

Seattle -- Online retail giant Amazon on Thursday announced plans to open a second massive company headquarters complex in North America, which would house as many as 50,000 employees. The company said it wants to build the campus -- already dubbed HQ2 -- in a metro area with more than 1 million people that boasts a business-friendly environment and nearby locations that could attract and retain strong technical talent. Amazon said it plans to invest more than $5 billion in construction, and already has opened its request for proposals from local and state governments. "We expect HQ2 to be a full equal to our Seattle headquarters," said founder and CEO Jeff Bezos. "Amazon HQ2 will bring billions of dollars in up-front and ongoing investments, and tens of thousands of high-paying jobs. We're excited to find a second home."
