o European Commission Approves Google's $12.5 Billion Deal for Motorola

Mountain View, Calif. -- The European Commission on Monday approved Mountain View-based Google's $12.5 billion acquisition of Illinois-based handset-maker Motorola Mobility. The deal, first announced in August, would give Google the hardware to go along with its popular Android smartphone operating system. In its ruling, the antitrust body said the acquisition "would not significantly modify the market situation in respect of operating systems and patents for these devices." U.S. regulators now are expected to follow suit. "This is an important milestone in the approval process and it moves us closer to closing the deal," wrote Don Harrison, Google's vice president and deputy general counsel in a blog post. "We are now just waiting for decisions from a few other jurisdictions before we can close this transaction."

o San Jose-Based Solar Junction Raises $19.2 Million in Fourth Round

San Jose, Calif. -- Solar Junction, a San Jose-based developer of high-efficiency solar cells, said on Monday it has raised $19.2 million in its fourth round of funding, which the company will use to ramp up manufacturing. Participants included new investor IQE and previous backers New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Advanced Technology Ventures (ATV) and Draper Fisher Jurvetson. IQE, which is investing $5 million, will receive an exclusive multi-year wafer supply contract with the company as part of the deal. Solar Junction said the capital will allow it to "meet demand and fulfill current and future orders with a number of CPV [concentrated photovoltaic] companies."

o Santa Clara-Based Hitachi Data Systems Completes Deal for Shoden

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Hitachi Data Systems (HDS), a Santa Clara-based unit of Japanese electronics giant Hitachi that provides technology and services designed to improve IT costs and agility, said on Monday it has completed its acquisition of Shoden Data Systems, a provider of data center technology in South Africa and across the sub-Saharan African continent. Financial terms of the deal, first announced in October, were not disclosed. Shoden develops products and technologies designed to optimize data center environments for major banking, telecom and retail clients in South Africa. The two companies previously had partnered for 11 years.

o Santa Clara-Based Soft Machines Raises $15 Million

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Soft Machines, a stealthy, Santa Clara-based semiconductor company, has raised $15 million in a new round of equity funding, the company revealed in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Three unidentified investors took part in the round. The company also raised $13 million in Aug, 2010, according to regulatory filings.

o CTIA Opens Entries for E-Tech Awards and Big Idea Contest

Washington, DC -- Wireless trade association CTIA on Monday opened nominations for its annual Emerging Technology (E-Tech) Awards and Big Idea Contest. The E-Tech Awards honor the industry's most innovative new wireless products and services in the areas of mobile apps, consumer electronics, enterprise and vertical markets and network infrastructure. The Big Idea Contest, in its second year, honors the top concepts for wireless products, apps and services, as decided by online voting. Entries for both are due by March 5, with winners scheduled to be announced at the International CTIA Wireless show set for May 8-10 in New Orleans. More information is available at the link below.
