o San Mateo-Based Appirio Raises $60 Million, Names CFO

San Mateo, Calif. -- Appirio, a San Mateo-based provider of cloud applications and platforms to businesses, said on Thursday it has raised $60 million in its fourth round of funding, led by General Atlantic. Previous backers Sequoia Capital and GGV Capital also participated in the round, which the company will use to expand its consulting practice areas, as well as to build out its cloud technology and further develop its crowdsourcing development platform, known as CloudSpokes. Appirio also has named Mark O'Connor as its CFO. O'Connor most recently served as the chief of staff and vice president of operations at Nuance Communications. o San Jose-Based Cisco to Pay $5 Billion to Acquire NDS Group

San Jose, Calif. -- Cisco, the San Jose-based network equipment giant, said on Thursday it will pay approximately $5 billion to acquire U.K.-based NDS Group, a developer of video software and content security tools designed to let service providers and media companies deliver and monetize video. The deal is expected to close after mid-year, when NDS's approximately 5,000 employees will join Cisco's Service Provider Video Technology Group. NDS provides software and services that allow video subscribers to intuitively view, search and navigate digital content on any device. Cisco said the acquisition will compliment its own Videoscape platform for service providers and media companies, as well as expand its reach into emerging markets such as China and India, where NDS has an established customer footprint. "Our strategy has always been driven by customer need and on capturing market transitions," said John Chambers, the chairman and CEO of Cisco. "Our acquisition of NDS fits squarely into this strategy, enabling content and service providers to deliver new video solutions that leverage the cloud."

The company will use the proceeds to expand its staff, broaden infrastructure and continue global expansion. "Boku has built a phenomenal business around online mobile payments," said Ravi Viswanathan, general partner at NEA. "The next step is bringing mobile payments offline, and that’s what Boku Accounts accomplishes."

"Parents are looking for sites they can feel good about, that help their kids develop socially, offer positive reinforcement and are creatively enriching," said co-founder and CEO Rajul Kadakia. "We are very excited to be developing a social platform featuring fresh and relevant interactivity for both kids and their families in a single environment that parents can trust."
