o Mountain View-Based Adaptive Planning Raises $22 Million in Funding

Mountain View, Calif. -- Adaptive Planning, a Mountain View-based developer of cloud-based corporate performance management software, said on Wednesday it has raised $22 million in a new round of funding, led by Norwest Venture Partners (NVP). Previous backers Cardinal Venture Capital, Clairmont Capital, Monitor Ventures and ONSET Ventures also participated in the round, which the company will use to accelerate growth in sales and marketing, product development and new channels and markets. "The new funding will allow us to scale our direct sales and partner channels worldwide, and to deliver a broad set of new performance management capabilities," said CEO John Herr. Adaptive Planning's platform is designed to help finance and management teams work together to plan, monitor and analyze financial and operational performance, using business data from across the organization.

o NYT: AOL Cuts Staff in Palo Alto; More Layoffs Expected

Palo Alto, Calif. -- AOL has laid off more than 40 employees at its Silicon Valley offices in Palo Alto, and plans to cut dozens more across the company in the coming weeks, The New York Times reported. The bulk of those affected were in the company's Instant Messenger group, and reportedly included Jason Shellen, the vice president of AOL's messenger products. Shellen joined AOL in late 2010 after it acquired his San Francisco-based company, Thing Labs. Future cuts are expected to focus on AOL's Patch.com hyperlocal news service. "We are making some strategic but very difficult changes to better align our resources with key areas of growth for us as a company," the company told The New York Times in a statement. "We remain committed to our presence in Silicon Valley and driving innovation in consumer products and mobile."

o Green Dot to Acquire Mountain View-Based Loopt for $43.4 Million

Mountain View, Calif. -- Green Dot, a Monrovia-based provider of reloadable prepaid debit cards, said it will pay $43.4 million to acquire Mountain View-based Loopt, developer of an app that maps a user's friends and offers nearby deals and reviews. The deal is expected to close by the end of the first quarter, when Loopt's current headquarters will become the new Silicon Valley hub for Green Dot's mobile technology and product development team. Green Dot said the acquisition will help it acquire and retain customers, roll out new banking and payment products and become a market leaders in mobile wallets, rewards and payments. "We believe that mobile phones have the potential to change the way people interact with their bank, control their money and pay for goods and services,” said Steve Streit, the chairman and CEO of Green Dot. "When Loopt's assets are layered into Green Dot's platform, we believe that a significant opportunity emerges for Green Dot to become a large-scale player in mobile technology solutions at the retail point of sale."

o Intel Science Talent Search Names Winners of Annual Competition

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Nithin Tumma, a 17 year old from Fort Gratiot, Mich., has been named the top winner of the Intel Science Talent Search, an annual competition that took place in DC over the past week. The competition, run by Santa Clara-based chipmaker Intel and the Society for Science & the Public (SSP), announced its winners at an awards gala Tuesday at the National Building Museum. Tumma won $100,000 from the Intel Foundation for his research, which could lead to more targeted and less toxic breast cancer treatments. He analyzed the molecular mechanisms in cancer cells and found that by inhibiting certain proteins, the growth of cancer cells may be slowed and their malignancy decreased. Second place honors and $75,000 went to Andrey Sushko, 17, of Richland, Wash., for his development of a tiny motor, only 7 mm (almost 1/4 inch) in diameter, which uses the surface tension of water to turn its shaft.
