o Menlo Park-Based Averail Lands $6 Million in First Round of Funding

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Averail, a Menlo Park-based startup developing a mobile content management system to help employees access and share enterprise documents on mobile devices, said on Tuesday it has raised $6 million in its first round of funding, co-led by Foundation Capital and Storm Ventures. Founded last year by mobile industry veterans John Drewry and Rahul Sharma, Averail said it will use the funding to bolster product development and expand its organization. "Smartphones and tablets are increasingly sweeping into businesses and fueling the consumerization of IT," said Drewry. "Yet access remains limited, and many employees still struggle with daily tasks that require collaboration across an organization." The company expects to release its first product after mid-year. Averail has named Paul Holland, general partner at Foundation Capital, and Tae Hea Nahm, managing director at Storm Ventures, to its board of directors.

o EMC Acquires San Francisco-Based Pivotal Labs

San Francisco -- EMC, the Massachusetts-based developer of information infrastructure technology, said on Tuesday it has acquired San Francisco-based Pivotal Labs, a provider of agile software development services and tools. Financial terms of the all-cash deal were not disclosed. EMC said the acquisition will add to its offerings for customers building "big data" analytic applications. Pivotal's agile project management tool, known as Pivotal Tracker, is currently used by more than 240,000 developers. "Last year we began work with Pivotal Labs on advanced development for EMC Greenplum Chorus, which ultimately opened data science teams up to an entirely new way to collaborate through socially enabled tools and techniques," said Bill Cook, the president and general manager of Greenplum, a division of EMC. "The transformative power of what we, together, could achieve for customers became quickly and abundantly clear." Pivotal's customers include Twitter, Best Buy, Groupon, Salesforce.com and EMI.

o Study: U.S. Broadband Adoption Improves Only Slightly from '09

Washington, DC -- On the two-year anniversary of the delivery of the National Broadband Plan, home broadband adoption in the U.S. remains approximately the same as it was in 2009, despite a dramatic rise in smartphone use, according to a new study released by TechNet. Specifically, 65% of Americans had broadband at home in 2009, according to a Federal Communications Commission survey. In the fall of 2011, the National Telecommunications & Information Administration report pegged home broadband adoption at 68%. "First class broadband is absolutely fundamental to America's economic growth," said Rey Ramsey, the president and CEO of TechNet. "And while on the whole the National Broadband Plan has created a framework for improving America's broadband environment, more work needs to be done." TechNet, a bipartisan policy and political network of technology CEOs, said the government's efforts so far have suffered from "insufficient coordination and a lack of clear strategy for assessing outcomes."
