o San Francisco-Based Zynga Acquires OMGPOP for $200 Million

San Francisco -- Zynga, the San Francisco-based developer of social games such as CityVille, FarmVille and Words With Friends, said it has acquired New York-based social game developer OMGPOP, makers of the popular mobile game Draw Something for the iOS, Android and Facebook platforms. The company paid approximately $200 million, according to Reuters. Launched just six weeks ago, Draw Something already has been downloaded over 35 million times, with more than 1 billion drawings created in the past week. "We think Draw Something is one of the most social, most expressive mobile games ever built with its unique social competition and unmatched player generated content," said David Ko, Zynga's chief mobile officer. "We’re excited about the brands OMGPOP has developed to date and we look forward to supporting the team's creativity and helping scale their incredible games to an even bigger global audience." OMGPOP began as iminlikewithyou, a social network for people to meet and play games. The company in 2009 then launched its social gaming website, OMGPOP.com. OMGPOP will remain headquartered in New York

o Senate Passes Bill Making it Easier for Startups to Raise Capital

Washington, DC -- The Senate on Thursday passed legislation designed to remove some of the red tape encountered by entrepreneurs trying to raise capital, but tweaked it by adding more language meant to protect investors. The Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act passed, 73-26, two weeks after initially clearing the House. The bill now heads back to House, where lawmakers are expected to vote on the revised version next week. The act changes Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) rules to create a new category of "emerging growth companies," which would be able to file for initial public offerings (IPOs) while remaining exempt from certain financial disclosures and other requirements. They also would be allowed to use the Internet to solicit investors in a practice generally known as "crowd-funding." Steve Case, the founder of investment firm Revolution and co-founder of AOL, said the legislation "will help entrepreneurs get faster access to capital to grow their companies and create jobs."

o Sunnyvale-Based Meru Names Bami Bastani as President and CEO

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Meru Networks, a Sunnyvale-based developer of wireless networking technology, has named Bami Bastani as its new president and CEO. He succeeds Ihab Abu-Hakima, who announced in October his plans to leave the company within six months. Bastani previously served as the president and CEO of Trident Microsystems and Anadigics, and earlier held executive roles at Fujitsu Microelectronics, National Semiconductor and Intel. "We were fortunate to have an exceptional field of candidates to choose from as our search attracted some of the best and the brightest in technology," said Harry Copperman, a board member and participant in the company's CEO search committee. "We are confident that our appointment of Dr. Bastani brings the right mix of talent and leadership to the company."

o Valentine's Day, Super Bowl Drive Web Traffic in Feb.

Reston, Va. -- Spurred by Valentine's Day, millions of Americans scoured the web for flowers, gifts and greetings in February, according to new figures from comScore. The category grew 28% for the month to 29.3 million visitors, led by ProFlowers.com, which spiked 394% to 5.4 million visitors. Super Bowl XLVI also helped drive traffic to websites promoted by advertisers, particularly related to autos. More than 27 million people visited an auto manufacturer site, up 17% from January, with Toyota, Honda and General Motors leading the way. "Valentine's Day and the Super Bowl seemed to be the driving forces behind much of the online activity in February as Americans browsed romantic gifts and checked out Super Bowl advertisers' websites, especially auto makers," said Jeff Hackett, executive vice president of comScore. "In addition, tax sites posted another month of gains as the filing deadline drew nearer."
