o Primedia to Acquire Rent.com from San Jose-Based eBay

San Jose, Calif. -- Primedia, an Atlanta-based operator of web sites and mobile apps focused on apartment and rental home listings, said it will acquire Rent.com from San Jose-based online auction giant eBay. Financial terms of the deal, expected to close by midyear, were not disclosed. eBay acquired Santa Monica-based Rent.com for $415 million in 2005. The acquisition will add another well-known brand to Primedia's apartment and rental home resources, which include ApartmentGuide.com, Rentals.com and RentalHouses.com. "Rent.com has a strong reputation, brand awareness, history and URL," said Charles Stubbs, the president and CEO of Primedia.

The deal will create a new, independent company called XOR Media. Financial terms were not disclosed. "We see this as a key investment with the tremendous potential of XOR Media's products, technologies, and people resources, operating independently and in partnership with SeaChange," said Terry Chen, a venture partner at VantagePoint. o Smartphones and Tablets Drive 20% of Web Traffic for NCAA Tournament

Reston, Va. -- People are increasingly relying on their smartphones and tablets to find information about the NCAA Tournament, according to a new study by comScore. The study found that consumers viewed 20% of browser-based sports content using their smartphones and tablets during the first two days of the tournament -- nearly twice as much as other content categories. "Over the past several years we've seen fans become more reliant on the web for NCAA tournament coverage. As media formats continue to evolve, we're rapidly seeing America's national college basketball obsession increasingly bleed over to other screens like smartphones and tablets," said Debbie Bradley, senior director at comScore. "When the content is highly time-sensitive -- such as with news or sports scores -- there's a greater likelihood of it being consumed on-the-go via mobile devices."
