San Jose, Calif. -- ThreatMetrix, a San Jose-based developer of cybercrime prevention tools, said on Tuesday it has raised $18 million in its fourth round of funding, led by August Capital. Previous backers Tenaya Capital, US Venture Partners and CM Capital also participated. Vivek Mehra, general partner with August Capital, has joined the company's board of directors. The news comes nearly three months after ThreatMetrix acquired Australia-based TrustDefender, a developer of secure browsing technology. "ThreatMetrix is expanding on all fronts including new products, applications, markets and geographies," said Reed Taussig, the company's president and CEO.

o San Francisco-Based Sojern Raises $7.5 Million in New Funding


San Francisco -- Sojern, a San Francisco-based travel data and media company, said on Tuesday it has landed $7.5 million in a new round of funding. Industry Ventures joined previous backers Norwest Venture Partners, Trident Capital and Focus Ventures in the round, which will support the company's continued expansion. Sojern has two product offerings -- the Airline Boarding Pass and the Sojern Media Platform (SMP). The Boarding Pass application provides targeted offers and content through air carriers such as American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, US Airways and United Airlines. The SMP, Sojern's newest offering, is an audience targeting product that combines proprietary data, targeting algorithms, advanced media buying and optimization technology.

o El Cerrito-Based Vigilent Raises $6.7 Million, Led by Accel Partners

El Cerrito, Calif. -- Vigilent, an El Cerrito-based developer of intelligent energy management systems for data centers, said on Tuesday it has raised $6.7 million in a new round of funding, led by Accel Partners. Super angel investors including Gaurav Garg and Peter Wagner also participated in the round. The company plans to use the proceeds to expand its portfolio of energy management products, move into new geographic regions and expand staffing. Vigilent's systems are designed to analyze massive amounts of data from hundreds or thousands of wireless sensors deployed throughout a data center. The information is then used to dynamically control cooling and air handling resources. The company, which is profitable, currently has more than 90 deployments throughout the U.S., Canada and Japan.

o San Francisco-Based Dolby Names Lewis Chew as New CFO

San Francisco -- Dolby Laboratories, the San Francisco-based developer of entertainment technology best known for high-quality audio and surround sound, on Tuesday named Lewis Chew as its new executive vice president and CFO, effective June 4. He will replace Murray Demo, who is retiring. Chew most recently spent 10 years as the senior vice president of finance and CFO of National Semiconductor. "I am confident that Lewis’s strong track record in finance, operations and IT will ensure a smooth transition," said Kevin Yeaman, Dolby's president and CEO.

San Francisco -- Third Rock Ventures, a Boston-based venture capital firm focused on building life sciences companies, has named Mark Goldsmith as a venture partner in its San Francisco office. Goldsmith previously served as the president and CEO of biopharmaceutical firm Constellation Pharmaceuticals, a Third Rock portfolio company. At Third Rock, Goldsmith will serve as a senior advisor and participate in the development and leadership of new companies. He also will continue serving as executive chairman of Constellation Pharmaceuticals.

o San Mateo-Based Wasabi to Launch Tech Accelerator in Baltimore

Baltimore -- Loyola University Maryland said on Tuesday it has partnered with San Mateo-based venture capital firm Wasabi Ventures to launch a new technology accelerator in Baltimore. Wasabi, which has offices in Baltimore, will provide staff to manage the accelerator, funding for start-up companies, internships for Loyola students and consulting from entrepreneur-in-residence Thomas "T.K." Kuegler, Wasabi's co-founder, general partner and a 1994 Loyola graduate. Kuegler said the project will allow his firm to participate "more actively in the broader emerging start-up community of Baltimore."

(San Francisco) Zipcar, the Massachusetts-based car sharing network that relies heavily on mobile technology and the Internet, said on Tuesday it has expanded its cargo van pilot program in San Francisco. The Zipvan program, which initially launched in San Francisco last November, gives clients access to Ford E-150 full-size cargo vans. Twenty vans now will be available for hourly or daily use, with rates starting at $15.75 an hour and $109 a day.
