o Report: Yahoo Restructuring to Include Thousands of Layoffs

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Three months into his reign as CEO of Sunnyvale-based Yahoo, Scott Thompson is preparing a massive restructuring of the struggling company that's likely to include thousands of layoffs, Dow Jones' All Things D reported, citing "multiple sources both inside and outside" the company. The cuts are expected to target multiple departments, with an emphasis on large product groups. Yahoo recently retained Boston Consulting Group to help determine its best options for growth, and could make an official announcement about the cuts before the end of this month. "Our leadership is engaged in a process that will generate significant strategic change at Yahoo, but final decisions have not yet been made at this point," Yahoo said in a statement to All Things D. The company had 14,100 employees at the end of last quarter.

o Redwood City-Based Virdia Unveils New Name, CEO and Funding

Redwood City, Calif. -- HCL CleanTech, a developer of cellulosic sugars and lignin used in the renewable chemicals, bio-energy and nutrition industries, said on Tuesday it has changed its name to Virdia, hired a new CEO and landed more than $20 million in a new round of funding. Investors included Khosla Ventures, Burrill & Company and Tamar Ventures, as well as company insiders. The company also has raised $10 million in a venture debt deal with Triple Point Capital. New CEO Philippe Lavielle, a former executive at Genencor, succeeds company co-founder Eran Baniel, who now serves as vice president of business development. Founded in 2007, Virdia is the developer of a process designed to convert cellulosic biomass to high quality fermentable sugars and lignin. Cellulosic sugars and lignin are important feedstock for the renewable chemicals industry and the second generation biofuels sector. The company said recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Mississippi Development Authority to build manufacturing facilities in the biomass-rich state.

o S.F.-Based Greenstart Accelerator Launches $6 Million Fund for Startups

San Francisco -- Greenstart, a San Francisco-based startup accelerator for cleantech-IT companies, said on Tuesday it has launched a new fund offering startups the opportunity to receive a $100,000 convertible note in addition to a $15,000 seed investment upon joining the program. The notes will be drawn from a $6 million fund, which will cover the next 60 companies in the program. "This allows the startups in the program to stay focused on customer and product development instead of hitting the streets for investors," said Mitch Lowe, the firm's managing partner. "It should also help Greenstart attract interest from a much wider pool of innovative entrepreneurs for our upcoming programs." Greenstart opened applications for its third program on Monday.

o AllStar Deals Launches Service Paying Users to Find Deals

San Francisco -- A new social commerce site plans to pay consumers to find daily deals and market them through their social networks. The site, AllStar Deals, initially will operate in the San Francisco; Washington, DC; and Tampa Bay/St. Petersburg markets. The idea, said founder and CEO Mark Levin, is to empower site visitors to work with merchants they regularly visit, such as restaurants, hair salons and gyms, and arrange deals, then post them on their Facebook and Twitter accounts. Each time their deal is purchased, they earn 20% of the net amount in cash. They also can earn 10% of the net profit by serving as affiliates and promoting other people's deals. "Giving consumers the opportunity to earn cash, rather than points or site credits, while also providing valuable purchasing advice to friends and family via social networks, is the epitome of social commerce," said Levin. "[That's] what we are basing our model on." Levin said the Maryland-based company plans to offer merchants 60% of deal revenue -- more than most current deal sites. It also plans to offer national deals in collaboration with celebrities and major brands.

o One in Seven U.S. Internet Users Visit Tax Site in January

Reston, Va. -- Nearly one in seven U.S. Internet users visited online tax sites in January, up 15% from a year ago, according to new figures released by comScore. The company credited the increase, in part, to ramped up ad expenditure among online tax preparers. The three largest do-it-yourself online tax preparation providers -- Intuit, TaxACT and H&R Block -- accounted for more than 90% of all online filings, with Intuit leading the market with a nearly 60% share. "While a large segment of Americans have become comfortable with filing their taxes online, the strong gains in the category this year seem to be propelled by increased marketing activity on the part of the key tax prep providers," said Brian Jurutka, a senior vice president at comScore.
