o Palo Alto-based mSpot Acquired by Samsung

Palo Alto, Calif. -- mSpot, the privately held, Palo Alto-based provider of a music and video delivery service for mobile devices, has been acquired by Samsung Electronics the company announced on Wednesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Founded in 2004, mSpot provides "white-labeled" cloud entertainment services for major U.S. mobile carriers, as well as its own brand services available in the Android Marketplace or App Store. Samsung said the acquisition will provide a cloud-based entertainment service for users of Samsung devices, while extending mSpot's cloud and streaming solutions to a broader base of customers internationally.

o Capital One Acquires San Francisco-Based Mobile Offers Firm

San Francisco, Calif. -- Bankons, a San Francisco-based mobile offers service, has been acquired by Virginia-based Capital One, the large credit card and financial services company. Bankons will become part of Capital One's Digital Innovation Lab. Financial terms of the deal were not released. "While the sun will be setting on the current Bankons apps & service, a new dawn is rising for us as we bring our technology and innovation to the Capital One Digital Innovation Lab," wrote Joshua Greenough, CEO of Bankons. "Our team and technology will be incorporated into the Labs innovation agenda and will help Capital One increase its strength in this field."

o AOL CEO Denies Reports That Company is Selling TechCrunch, Engadget

New York -- Tim Armstrong, the CEO of AOL, denied media reports on Wednesday that the company was looking to sell its TechCrunch and Engadget blogs. "We are planning to invest in those properties, not sell," Mr. Armstrong said in an interview with Ad Age. The magazine reported that AOL had approached potential investors to provide capital to the blogs, but was now most likely going to internally invest in them.

o Menlo Park Planning Commission Approves Facebook Expansion

Palo Alto, Calif. -- The Menlo Park Planning Commission voted 6-0 Monday night in favor of allowing Facebook to expand its new campus, according to the Palo Alto Daily News. The article said that Facebook plans to eventually "employ 6,600 people at the Bayfront Expressway/Willow Road campus, almost double the 3,600 that Sun Microsystems was allowed when it occupied the site." The plan must now pass the Menlo Park City Council. In return for the approval, Facebook agreed to various traffic reduction measures, including the use of shuttle buses and various programs that will encourage its employees to rideshare or take their bikes to work.

o SGI Receives 4-Year DoD Contract Valued at $27.8 Million

Fremont, Calif. -- SGI, a Fremont-based provider of technical computing services, announced on Wednesday that the United States Department of Defense (DoD) has selected the company's high performance computing system to provide computer resources for the Air Force Research Laboratory. The agreement also includes storage and four years of support in a transaction valued at over $27.8 million.
