o NEA Raises $2.08 Billion For Newest Fund

Menlo Park, Calif. -- New Enterprise Associates, the venture capital firm with offices in Menlo Park and Maryland, has raised over $2.08 billion for its newest venture fund, according to regulatory filings. NEA is expected to close the new fund, called NEA 14, at $2.56 billion later this year. NEA previously closed on a $2.5 billion fund in Jan., 2010. The firm currently has more than $11 billion in committed capital and has funded more than 650 companies in the information technology, energy technology and healthcare sectors. One of its most lucrative recent investments was in Chicago-based Groupon, which went public earlier this year.

o San Jose XtremIO Acquired by EMC for $430 Million

San Jose, Calif. -- EMC, the large IT infrastructure company, announced on Wednesday it has acquired XtremIO, a privately held, San Jose-based developer of data storage systems, for $430 million in cash. Founded in 2009, XtremIO has developed storage systems for large organizations that use solid-state, flash memory. The company is undertaking field trials in the U.S., Europe, and Israel. Its systems are expected to be commercially available later this year. Investors in XtremIO include Battery Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Jerusalem Venture Partners, and Giza Ventures. The company raised $19 million in its second round of venture capital last October.

o San Mateo-based Coupa Software Raises $22 Million in Fifth Round

San Mateo, Calif. -- Coupa Software, a provider of spending control software for organizations, announced on Thursday it has raised $22 million in its fifth round of venture capital, which was led by Crosslink Capital. Founded in 2006, Coupa offers cloud-based "spend optimization" software used by more than 200 customers in 40 countries. The company says its purchasing and procurement software can help reduce an organization's spending costs by up to 11%. Other investors in the company include Battery Ventures, BlueRun Ventures, El Dorado Ventures and Mohr Davidow Ventures.

o Berkeley-based Godengo Raises $6.8 Million in Venture Capital

Berkeley, Calif. -- Godengo, a Berkeley-based provider of online products and digital advertising platforms for publishers, has raised $6.8 million in a venture capital round that could eventually reach $9 million, the company disclosed in a new filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The company merged two months ago with Texterity, a Massachusetts-based provider of digital and mobile publishing services. The combined company now provides services to around 1,200 magazine titles owned by over 500 publishers throughout the U.S., Canada, and Australia. Godengo also helps publishers transition and enhance their content across multiple digital and mobile platforms. New Science Ventures is one of Godengo's main investors.

o DC-Based SocialCode Strikes Agreement With Digg; Hires Their Engineers

San Francisco, Calif. -- In a somewhat unusual agreement for two companies that aren't merging, DC-based SocialCode, the Washington Post-owned advertising firm focused on social media, announced on Thursday that it has hired several members of the engineering team from San Francisco-based Digg, once one of the hottest content discovery web services. Digg's domain, service and technology were not acquired by SocialCode, although Digg agreed to the arrangement. Terms of any deal were not released. "We are excited to have this exceptional team of developers join SocialCode and our mission of providing the most advanced social marketing solutions and insights for brands," said Laura O'Shaughnessy, CEO of SocialCode. "This agreement marks the first of many planned moves, fueling SocialCode's commitment to innovation."

o Politico: Twitter May Soon Be Hiring Its First Lobbyist in DC

San Francisco -- Politico is reporting that Twitter may be about to hire its first lobbyist in Washington, D.C. "Twitter is hiring a manager of public policy, according to a recent job listing," said the article. "While Twitter has yet to register to lobby any in-house talent -- even though it brought on Adam Sharp in 2010 as manager of government and political partnerships -- the new position sounds conspicuously like a lobbying gig."
