Under the agreement, VMware will pay $1.05 billion in cash plus approximately $210 million of assumed unvested equity awards. The deal is expected to close during the second half of 2012. "The acquisition of Nicira adds to our portfolio of networking assets and positions VMware to be the industry leader in software-defined networking," said CEO Paul Maritz. Nicira's platform allows clients such as AT&T, eBay, Fidelity and Rackspace to create isolated virtual networks and services that are completely decoupled and independent from the physical network. http://www.vmware.com/ http://nicira.com/ http://www.vmware.com/company/news/releases/vmw-nicira-07-23-12.html _____________________________________________ o Palo Alto-Based Apigee Raises $20 Million in New Funding Palo Alto, Calif. -- Apigee, a Palo Alto-based developer of API technology designed to help packets of information flow from one app to another, said on Tuesday it has raised $20 million in a new round of funding, led by Focus Ventures. "We've had a tremendous first year, validated by more than 12,000 new developers per month, and millions of dollars in revenue,": said Friedman, the company's CEO. "This funding will enable us to scale our success and better deliver on our mission, bringing millions more developers to mobile." http://xamarin.com http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20120724005404/en/Xamarin-Raises-12M-Businesses-Address-Mobile-Developer _____________________________________________ o Confidence of Silicon Valley Venture Capitalists Falls in Q2 San Francisco -- The confidence of Silicon Valley venture capitalists dropped during the second quarter, according to new report by Mark Cannice, professor of entrepreneurship and innovation at the University of San Francisco School of Management. Based on a survey of 30 Bay Area venture capitalists, the new Silicon Valley Venture Capitalist Confidence Index came in at 3.47 on a scale of five (with five indicating high confidence and one indicating low confidence). The index fell from 3.79 a quarter ago. "Concerns over macro issues such as the fate of Europe, regulatory constraints in the life science arena and disappointment in the Facebook IPO overshadowed a steady confidence in the positive technology trends that are centered in the Valley and faith in entrepreneurs to build innovative business models to leverage these technological trends in relevant market segments," wrote Cannice. In Silicon Valley, companies raised $3.2 billion in the quarter, up from $2.1 billion last quarter and $3.1 billion a year ago. "If funding levels in the second half of the year remain consistent with the first half of the year, VC investing in 2012 will fall short of the nearly $30 billion invested in 2011 but will exceed the $23 billion invested in 2010," said Tracy Lefteroff, global managing partner of the venture capital practice at PwC US. "Software and Internet companies continue to be attractive industries for VCs since most of these companies tend to be capital efficient and don’t require large amounts of capital to operate." The software industry received the highest level of funding for all industries with $2.3 billion -- the highest total for the sector since the second quarter of 2001. Life sciences investing, meanwhile, declined for the fourth straight quarter, most notably in the biotechnology sector. http://www.pwc.com/us/en/press-releases/2012/2012-q2-moneytree.jhtml _____________________________________________ |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| Drive Sales - Advertise with Tech Wire - Special Summer Rates According to a recently released study by eMarketer, online advertising is expected to generate $39.5 billion in sales this year…Increase your sales revenue.
