o S.F.-Based Carrick Capital Partners Closes Inaugural $180 Million Fund

San Francisco -- Carrick Capital Partners, a private equity firm launched in San Francisco earlier this year, said on Tuesday it has closed its first fund at $180 million. The fund will invest in companies that focus on technology-enabled service offerings, business process outsourcing, transaction processing, software as a service and enterprise software. Carrick was co-founded by Marc McMorris, a former General Atlantic managing director who led investments in business services and software, and Jim Madden, the former founder and CEO of Exult, a human resources business processing company that he grew from concept to more than $500 million in revenues. Madden said the firm "seeks to invest in companies that possess the right fundamentals to significantly grow their operations."

o Zillow to Acquire San Francisco-Based HotPads

San Francisco -- HotPads.com, the San Francisco-based developer of a map-based rental housing search engine, said it will be acquired by Seattle-based Zillow, operator of a large real estate information marketplace, for $16 million in cash. The deal is expected to close by the end of the year. HotPads was launched in Washington, DC in 2005, but moved to San Francisco in mid-2011 to tap the area's vast developer talent, as well as to more easily collaborate with partners and clients. The company operates a rental housing website and five mobile apps across iPhone, iPad and Android. Zillow said the acquisition will allow it to expand the size of its growing rental audience and extend the reach of its marketing and productivity tools for rental professionals. "This acquisition represents a significant step-change for Zillow Rentals, allowing us to dramatically increase the number of leads we send to landlords," said Spencer Rascoff, the CEO of Zillow. HotPads has a younger, complementary and rental-focused audience." HotPads has 19 employees, who will continue to operate from San Francisco.
