o NYT: Google Expected to Announce $1 Billion Deal for Waze

Mountain View, Calif. -- Looking to expand its domination of the online mapping space, Mountain View-based Google is expected to announce its acquisition of Palo Alto-based Waze, developer of a social mapping service designed to give drivers the best routes given current traffic conditions. The New York Times reported that the deal, expected to be announced later this week, could be worth more than $1 billion, citing people familiar with the situation. Waze, which has major operations in Israel, previously had been in discussions for a possible deal with Facebook. The company, which is backed by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, BlueRun Ventures, Magma Venture Partners and Vertex Venture Capital, claims to have 47 million users worldwide.

o Santa Clara-Based Mercatus Raises $2 Million in First Round

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Mercatus, the Santa Clara-based developer of a FICO score equivalent for energy projects, said on Monday it has raised $2 million in its first round of funding, led by Vision Ridge Partners. Augment Ventures and Shah Capital also participated. Since launching in 2009 inception, Mercatus, formerly known as SCS Renewables, has assessed over 3.2 GW of solar projects, while enabling $250 million in investments and transactions. Developers load project information onto the company's platform and 48 hours later, the project receives a FICO score equivalent, which is visible to both developers and investors. The platform is based on an appraisal methodology that rates eight key categories.

o Mountain View-Based Fox Technologies Acquired by Parallax Capital

Mountain View, Calif. -- Fox Technologies (FoxT), a Mountain View-based developer of access management and governance software, said on Monday it has been acquired by Southern California-based Parallax Capital Fund, a private equity fund managed by Parallax Capital Partners. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. James Hale, managing partner of Parallax, said FoxT will retain its name, while significantly increasing its sales, technical and support staff in the coming months. The company has named technology industry veteran Victor Shepherd as its new CEO, succeeding Subhash Tantry, who will remain as an advisor. Other members of the company's leadership team will remain in place. FoxT's software protects sensitive data for more than 150 of the Global 1000 companies including four of the top 10 banks.

o Report: Silicon Valley Leads Nation in Percentage of STEM Jobs

San Jose, Calif. -- Silicon Valley, including the San Jose, Sunnyvale and Santa Clara areas, leads the nation in the percentage of jobs in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math, according to a new report by the Brookings Institution. All told, 33.2% of the region's jobs are in the STEM fields, topping second-place Washington, DC by more than 6%. Silicon Valley also leads in terms of STEM jobs requiring at least a Bachelor's degree (72.5%). The San Francisco-Oakland area isn't far behind, ranking seventh in job percentage (23.9%) and third in degree required (63.5%). A complete look at the data is available at the links below.

o Spinnakr Lands Funding, Launches Site Optimization Platform

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Spinnakr, the developer of a service designed to simplify website targeting, said on Monday it has landed a new round of funding from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, 500Startups and Point Nine Capital. Financial terms were not disclosed. The company, which has offices in Palo Alto and Washington, also announced the launch of its real-time analytics platform, which is designed to collect data on site visitors and instantly detect trends, such as the arrival of a certain type of visitor, a spike in a set of search terms or a surge of traffic from an article. The events are prioritized, allowing site owners to respond by changing their site or adding custom messaging to target a particular segment. Spinnakr founders Michael Mayernick and Adam Bonnifield had previously built some of the first online targeting systems used in politics, working with congressional, senatorial and gubernatorial campaigns. The company said it currently optimizes 10 million page views a month for clients.

o Cable Giant Comcast Launches Home-Based Wi-Fi Network

Philadelphia -- Cable giant Comcast said on Monday it has launched a new home-based, neighborhood hotspot initiative, aimed at creating a network of millions of access points. The company said its newest wireless gateway broadcasts two Wi-Fi signals -- one configured for the private use of the home subscribe, and a second a neighborhood "xfinitywifi" signal that can be shared. The network will allow visiting subscribers to sign in and connect using their own usernames and passwords. Comcast launched a trial of the service last year on parts of the East Coast.

(San Francisco) Twelve percent of Bay Area CFOs expect their companies to add new professional-level positions in the third quarter, according to a new forecast from staffing firm Robert Half. Thirteen percent said they will not be hiring, even to fill an open position, and 5% plan to reduce staff levels. Another 69% said they will hire for roles that open during the next three months.
