o San Francisco-Based Twilio Raises $70 Million in Fourth Round

San Francisco -- Twilio, the San Francisco-based provider of a web service allowing developers to integrate phone calls, text messages and IP voice communications into their apps, has raised $70 million in its fourth round of funding, TechCrunch reported on Friday. Redpoint Ventures led the round, which also included participation from Draper Fisher Jurvetson and previous backer Bessemer Venture Partners. The company previously had raised $33.5 million since its inception. Jeff Lawson, the CEO of Twilio, told TechCrunch called an initial public offering (IPO) for the company "the next logical step."

o Mountain View-Based Mirantis Lands Another $10 Million in First Round

Mountain View, Calif. -- Mirantis, a Mountain View-based provider of software and services designed to let users deploy production-grade OpenStack clouds, said it has raised $10 million in the second tranche of its first round, which included investments from Ericsson, Red Hat, SAP Ventures and previous backer WestSummit Capital. The company now has raised $20 million in the round since December. The initial tranche included participation from Dell Ventures, Intel Capital and WestSummit. Mirantis said it will use the new capital to enhance Fuel, its tool for managing and deploying OpenStack clouds, as well as to integrate with technology and products from partners.

o San Jose-Based Oclara Announces Retirement of Chairman and CEO

San Jose, Calif. -- Oclaro, a San Jose-based maker of lasers and optical components, modules and subsystems, said on Friday that Alain Couder has retired as its chairman and CEO. The company's board of directors has named board member Greg Dougherty as its new CEO and Marissa Peterson, another board member, as its chairman. "Since joining the company in 2007, Alain has played an important role in transforming the company from a small optical component company called Bookham into an industry leader," said Peterson.

San Francisco -- Salesforce.com, the San Francisco-based developer of customer relationship management software, has named Keith Block as its president and vice chairman. Block, who previously spent 26 years at Oracle, will lead the company's global sales, customer support and consulting services organizations. Marc Benioff, Salesforce.com's chairman and CEO, said that Block's track record leading sales, consulting and engineering teams "makes him a powerful addition to our world-class distribution and leadership team."

o Bessemer Venture Partners Leads $51 Million Round for Affirmed Networks

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Bessemer Venture Partners, the Menlo Park-based venture capital firm, said it has led a new $51 million round of funding for Massachusetts-based Affirmed Networks, a developer of tools designed to help mobile operators deal with the explosion of data usage and lessen the strain on their networks. KCK Group and several previous backers also participated in the company's third round. Affirmed said that ifs network function virtualization tools "transform mobile networks from a legacy access architecture to intelligent, virtualized networks." Bob Goodman, a partner at Bessemer, will join the company's board of directors.

Sunnyvale-based NextNav said it has gained approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to begin commercial operation of its advanced positioning network, which is designed to support 9-1-1 emergency first responders. The company has been operating a location network for trial, testing and other non-commercial purposes in the Bay Area for more than three years. Its terrestrial positioning network is designed to complement GPS in urban areas and inside buildings.
