o Mountain View-Based Google to Expand Washington, DC Offices

Mountain View, Calif. -- Internet search giant Google plans to relocate and expand its DC offices, real estate firm Republic Properties announced on Wednesday. The Mountain View-based company will lease 54,000 square feet at Republic Square I, located near Union Station. The company currently leases a little more than half that space at its current Washington location. "We are extremely pleased to have Google join our other high-powered tenants," said Steve Grigg, the president and CEO of Republic Properties, in a statement. The news comes as Google continues to spend more on lobbying than any other technology company. A recent report by George Mason University's Mercatus Center found that Google spent more than $16 million on lobbying efforts last year, over twice as much as Microsoft and HP.

o Report: LivingSocial to Stop Producing Local Events

Washington, DC -- Daily deals giant LivingSocial is shedding its unprofitable local events business to focus more heavily on larger, multi-city events, the Washington Business Journal reported. The decision to cut the "Adventures" business will impact 30 full-time employees, the company said. "While we have found great success in our bigger events -- BeerFest, Sumo & Sushi and 5k Dance Party -- that are designed to tour from city to city, we did not find a similar model for our local productions," spokeswoman Sara Parker told the Journal. "Therefore, we have made the decision to shift our focus from smaller, locally conceived events entirely to larger touring events."
