o Belmont-Based Defnese.net Emerges from Stealth with $9.5M in Funding

Belmont, Calif. -- Defense.net, a Belmont-based startup focused on defending customers against Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, on Tuesday emerged from stealth mode after raising $9.5 million in funding. Bessemer Venture Partners led the round. Defense.net was founded in December by Barrett Lyon, and the company has since been building a DDoS defense network designed to combat large-scale attacks. "The modern Internet is different from what we were defending 10 years ago," said Lyon. "It's not just websites. It's critical financial transactions. It's video, it's mobile applications, it's APIs that integrate systems among institutions. We had to design defenses to protect all those systems from DDoS attacks." The company, which hasn't yet unveiled its first products, said its technology will both protect against modern DDoS attacks and preserve the performance of applications. Defense.net was incubated in the Menlo Park office of Bessemer Venture Partners, with partner David Cowan, the co-founder of VeriSign, joining the company's board.

o San Francisco-Based Zynga to Shutter OMGPOP Social Games Site

San Francisco -- Zynga, the financially struggling publisher of social games such as Words With Friends and FarmVille, said it plans to shutter its OMGPOP social games site "to make way for new and exciting gaming opportunities." The company acquired New York-based OMGPOP, maker of the popular mobile game Draw Something, for $210 million last spring. The site will close on Sept. 30, though Zynga said that visitors will be able to continue playing games such as Draw Something, Draw Something 2 and Draw My Thing. "We regret that this decision will affect some of our players, but we invite you to visit Zynga.com and try some of our other games," wrote Zynga on its website.

o Fifth Street to Open Venture Lending Practice in Palo Alto

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Fifth Street Management, a Connecticut-based alternative asset manager, said on Tuesday it will expand into venture lending through a new Silicon Valley unit called Fifth Street Technology Partners. The new group, based in Palo Alto, will be led by Michael David, former co-head and managing director of ORIX Venture Finance. It will make structured and secured debt investments ranging from $5-$50 million in later stage technology companies. "As later stage companies exit the venture capital phase, they become natural candidates for financing in conjunction with sponsor-led buyouts," said David. Fifth Street Technology Partners also will have an office in Texas.

o Washington Post Shares Rise Following Sale to Amazon's Bezos

Washington, DC -- Shares of The Washington Post jumped more than 4% on Tuesday, a day after the surprise announcement that Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos will pay $250 million to acquire The Washington Post's flagship newspaper and affiliate publications. Bezos, who plans to keep his full-time job as the CEO of Amazon, said he expects to implement a number of changes at The Post, which like most newspapers has suffered in recent years from a dwindling subscriber base and downturn in ad revenue. "The Internet is transforming almost every element of the news business: shortening news cycles, eroding long-reliable revenue sources, and enabling new kinds of competition, some of which bear little or no news-gathering costs," wrote Bezos in an open letter to Post employees. "There is no map, and charting a path ahead will not be easy. We will need to invent, which means we will need to experiment." Bezos, who is estimated to be worth $25 billion and has never owned a newspaper, made the deal following secretive negotiations with the Graham family, which has controlled the newspaper for 80 years. Amazon will have no role in the acquisition, which also includes the Express newspaper, The Gazette Newspapers, Southern Maryland Newspapers, Fairfax County Times, El Tiempo Latino and Greater Washington Publishing. Slate magazine, TheRoot.com and Foreign Policy are not part of the deal and will remain with The Washington Post Company, as will the WaPo Labs and SocialCode businesses. The Washington Post Company, which also owns Kaplan, Post–Newsweek Stations and Cable ONE, plans to change its name.
