In a conference call on Wednesday, Armstrong told analysts that roughly 300 of the company's 900 Patch sites will struggle to reach his stated goal of profitability by the end of this year. "One-third are basically very good-looking things, viable business models that we want to pursue," said Armstrong. "One-third look like they are going to get to that first bucket. And one-third basically look like, in the timeframe and focus we have right now on getting to profitability, it's going to be tough." Armstrong reportedly told employees on Wednesday that AOL has no plans to discard Patch, but is hoping to partner some of the sites with local newspapers. Armstrong was expected to review more detailed plans about Patch with AOL's board on Thursday. "Our number one North Star goal is to get Patch to profitability," said Armstrong. The company said it plans to buy the shares from time to time on the open market and through privately negotiated transactions. The new program is in addition to VMware's ongoing $250 million stock repurchase program, originally announced in November. The organization said the number of IT jobs grew 0.4% to 4.49 million in July. Since July 2012, the figure has grown 5.9%, with the industry adding 252,000 jobs.
