Longwood Fund and two other new investors joined previous backers Morgenthaler Ventures, Advanced Technology Ventures and Delphi Ventures in the round, which the company will use to accelerate the development of its lead clinical-stage candidate. The drug, currently known as CB-839, blocks the growth and survival of many different types of cancer cells by interfering with their metabolism of glutamine. "We will advance CB-839 through an early set of clinical trials aimed at identifying specific populations of cancer patients with glutamine-dependent tumors that would benefit from treatment with CB-839," said Susan Molineaux, the company's president and CEO. http://www.calithera.com http://ca.finance.yahoo.com/news/calithera-biosciences-secures-35-million-123000677.html _____________________________________________ o Computer Giant Dell Completes $24.9 Billion Deal to Go Private Round Rock, Texas -- Following months of contentious battles with major shareholders, Dell founder Michael Dell and technology investment firm Silver Lake Partners on Tuesday completed their $24.9 billion buyout of the Texas-based computer giant. Trading of Dell's stock will cease at the end of business Tuesday, with the company moving to delist from the NASDAQ. "Today, Dell enters an exciting new chapter as a private enterprise," said Dell, the company's chairman and CEO. Since last winter, Dell had been sparring over the future direction of the company with investors led by Carl Icahn, until Icahn last month bowed out of the bidding. Shareholders will receive $13.75 in cash for each share, plus a special cash dividend of $0.13 a share. http://www.dell.com/learn/us/en/uscorp1/secure/2013-10-29-dell-completes-go-private-transaction _____________________________________________ o San Mateo-Based Rumble Entertainment Raises $17.5 Million San Mateo, Calif. -- Rumble Entertainment, a San Mateo-based developer and publisher of multiplatform free-to-play games, said on Tuesday it has raised $17.5 million in its second round of funding, led by Nexon. TriplePoint Capital and previous backers Google Ventures and Khosla Ventures also participated in the round, which increases the company's total funding to more than $35 million. The company will use the funding to fuel growth, expanding its portfolio of games and delivering them to more devices. Rumble's announced slate of premium games includes KingsRoad, a medieval action role-playing game; Ballistic, a fast paced first-person shooter; and Nightmare Guardians, a multiplayer tower defense game. http://www.rumblegames.com http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20131029005664/en/Rumble-Entertainment-Closes-17.5-Million-Series-Financing _____________________________________________ o Comcast Program Connects More Than 1 Million to Low-Cost Broadband Washington, DC -- Cable giant Comcast said on Tuesday that its program providing low-cost broadband service to needy families now has connected more than 1 million Americans.
